Obama: Jesus would back my tax-the-rich policy

Obama said that as a person who has been "extraordinarily blessed," he is willing to give up some of the tax breaks he enjoys because doing so makes economic, and religious sense.

"For me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus's teaching that for unto whom much is given, much shall be required," Obama said, quoting the Gospel of Luke.

Well, that is certainly one way to look at it. Listen, if it made economic sense (and I am not sure if it does or if it doesn't) I wouldn't mind. I know that being a middle class American makes me more "blessed" than many people in this world so I can understand where he is coming from. A guy came by the church building this past Sunday after services and requested help with getting some food for his family. The policy of the church is not to give money so I took the guy grocery shopping for the elders and paid for it with a church check. Then I swung by my house and gave him some frozen ground beef and deer out of my freezer as well. I really think the same way as President Obama (and I think a lot of republicans and democrats too) as well about being blessed and helping others. I am just not sure if it makes financial sense to just tax the wealthy. I saw some numbers the other day and it looks like they are going to have to tax all of us to do any good....that is if they don't cut spending as well.

The more complex our tax code the more open it is for manipulation/corruption/cheating.

Flat tax with standard deduction (in my proposal it would be two tiered) with no corporate tax code. So many problems solved.

I tend to agree with this SF, especially the part about the cheating and corruption. Does that make me a republican? :whoa:

That's what so many people who say raise the taxes on the rich miss. If you want more revenue for the government you can even lower the tax rates but you need to eliminate some/many of the deductions that are currently on the books.

Even though my suggestion is FAR more progressive than the current tax code, you still have parrots like Dung shouting 'it's not progressive enough!' and then he sits back and watches as our current tax code gets more complex and becomes more REGRESSIVE at the top and sighs in relief because the status quo has been maintained.
