LOL....i read you right then

you are blaming the GOP for obama's failure to push immigration...fact is obama came out and said this without even trying, he didn't put in .00001% of the effort he put in for h/c....you're saying that because obama allegedly can't get GOP support, why bother, IOW, its all the GOP's fault....

that you can't see you are in fact doing what the author said obama is doing, effectively blaming the GOP, is fucking hilarious

From the sounds of this, "Good luck. Obama knows full well that the Republicans won't help him cross the street until after November. Besides, where was this insistence on waiting for Republican support when the cause was health care reform? There, the president forged ahead without the GOP." the author is fast becoming one.

Why doesn't he have any harsh words for the partisan stonewallling being done by congressional Righties?

Why didn't he mention that Obama waited FOR MONTHS for Republican support of any kind on HCR before he pressed on without the GOP?

I don't. I used him as an example because even a hack like Krugman acknowledges the immigration issue is not just a partisan issue. I left out that even in the Hispanic community not everyone believes illegals should be given amnesty etc. etc.

The author of the piece admits that Righties are stonewalling right in his article:

"Good luck. Obama knows full well that the Republicans won't help him cross the street until after November."

Go back and read his past columns if you want to see him call out or rip on Republicans because he's done it plenty. To read one column and declare the guy a hack because you happen to disagree with it is pretty shortsighted (at least in this case based on his prior work) in my opinion.

Additionally at the end of the day when you are in control and in power as Obama and the Democrats are you will get more credit and you will get more blame. That's the nature of the beast. So yes the focus is going to be more on Obama. Go back and read his columns in the 2000's and you will see the focus on Bush.

And this guy focuses more on immigration issues.

you are slow on the uptake....he is saying obama is BLAMING the republicans because obama believes that no GOP will help him

he has a majority in both houses and yet still has to blame the gop...fact is, he doesn't care about immigration reform, he is beholden to the unions and they don't want immigration reform

Obama can't magically create 60 votes in the Senate out of a caucus of 59. That's my point.

And, as I stated previously, I understand why people are upset with Obama, but political reality being what it is (and the author seemingly understands the political reality) immigration reform isn't going to happen whether Obama pushes for it or not. You can't create 60 votes by sheer force of will.

I assume you mean can not in your last sentence (but maybe not).

Obama does not lack for confidence so I find it difficult to think that he doesn't believe he can't peel off at least one Republican vote in the Senate on this issue.

Obama believes the GOP won't help him because they have said exactly that!

It wouldn't matter what anyone put in it. Any attempt at immigration reform before the November elections would be summarily shot down by partisan Righties who cannot let Obama have any victories, if they hope to win in November.

I would also note that in 2007 and 2008 there was actually cause for some optimism that a bipartisan immigration bill could pass the Senate quite easily. In 2006 you had 23 Republicans vote for a bill that was co-sponsored by Ted Kennedy and John McCain. In 2007 you had 12 Republicans vote for a slightly more conservative bill. But in 2010 you have zero. Lindsay Graham flirted with co-sponsoring a bill for a while but has since demurred. And the reason why Republicans aren't going to help out the Democrats on this issue is fairly obvious.

From a strictly political perspective if Obama or the Democrats feel immigration is a winning issue (which they may not) they can attempt to pass reform and show the voting public that it is the Republicans that are holding it up/blocking it. Of course if the public is against reform that is probably not a winning tactic. It surely wouldn't be the first time this technique has been tried.

Well, I think a fair assessment for the Democrats is is that it isn't necessarily winning issue for 2010 and hence isn't a high priority. Maybe some token effort could be done, but what's the point?

For the Republicans, opposing immigration is a winning issue for them and not letting the Democrats deliver on immigration is a winning issue. That's why it will never pass.

you don't know there is zero until the vote hits the floor...you obviously have no idea of the political process and how many times people change their vote once it hits the floor...what is totally stupid about this is, obama didn't give up on h/c when he lacked the votes, he pushed through a crap bill because nothing else mattered to him
