What the Trayvon Martin shooting should tell us is that the stereotypes that we have of people can have deadly consequences.

Martin was nothing more than a young man wearing athletic shoes, jeans and a hoodie.

For George Zimmerman, that's the uniform of a suspicious person. And it apparently was that simple observation that led Zimmerman to follow Martin in his car, get out, confront Martin and eventually shoot him fatally.

It has been amazing to listen to the reaction of some folks.

But nothing got me more charged up than hearing Geraldo Rivera say on "Fox and Friends" that by wearing a hoodie, Martin contributed to his own death.

"When you see a kid walking down the street, particularly a dark-skinned kid like my son Cruz — who I constantly yelled at when he was going out wearing a damn hoodie or those pants around his ankles. 'Take that hood off!' People look at you and what's the instant identification, what's the instant association? It's those crime scene surveillance tapes," Rivera said.

"Every time you see someone stickin' up a 7-11, the kid's wearing a hoodie. Every time you see a mugging on a surveillance camera or they get the old lady in the alcove, it's a kid wearing a hoodie. You have to recognize that this whole stylizing yourself as a 'gangsta.' ... You're gonna be a gangsta wanna? Well, people are going to perceive you as a menace. That's what happens. It is an instant reflexive action."

He later added, "When you see a black or Latino youngster, particularly on the street, you walk to the other side of the street. You try to avoid that confrontation. Trayvon Martin, you know, God bless him, he was an innocent kid, a wonderful kid, a box of Skittles in his hands. He didn't deserve to die. But I'll bet you money, if he didn't have that hoodie on, that nutty neighborhood watch guy wouldn't have responded in that violent and aggressive way."

Gerardo should go back to opening safes.

What an idiot.

Oh, Popeye, this is a race issue, racism still exists in the good old USA, and Obama's son would look like Trayvon and not Beaver Cleaver, so get over yourself.

and so would Louis Farrakhan's son......or their sons could look like millions of black teen gangbangers too.....so what?
Thats what make it idiotic.

It is a race issue ?....Maybe so....but thats no reason to pour fuel on the fire is it.....

Do you want to see an escalation of trouble between the Hispanics and Blacks.....thats kind of a stupid idea don't you think....?

Obama should be trying to tone down the racist rhetoric.....not add to it....

You are a racist, bravo, it is people like you that escalate trouble with your stereotypes, why even mention Farakken in this matter?

So is Gerardo sticking up for the Hispanic.....the Latino.....???
Is that whats got your knickers in a knot.......or is it to bash Fox.....

If it wasn't so sad, this whole thing would be laughable....

News flash, Lainos wear hoodies, too. He wasn't sticking up for Latinos, he was condemning a kid for wearing a hoodie and claimed that is that brought trouble his way. My son wears hoodies. He was trying to make it a stereotype for black criminals.

It is like saying the girl in the mini dress deserved to be raped for the way she was dressed.

Typical.....another lefty that can't address the points made so they attack the poster....just admit you don't have the intelligence to debate the matter and fuck off....

Heres something you might call stereotyping....."you left-wing idiots are all alike"......

So are you. Because you accuse another of being racist. Why do Lefties discuss racism so much? It's getting old....

More talk of racism coming from the Left.... what a surprise.....

Really ?.....Well, I only read the OP and if didn't say that at all.....not what is in quotes that I assume are the words of Rivera....

Since it wasn't a Latino who was wearing the hood, we can't assume anything. There aren't enough facts to support that dynamic. Stop race baiting.

Really, you just don't want to talk about, swep it under the rug, the dirty little secret that racism still exists.
Oh, I know it exists. I've seen it with my own eyes, and Democrats are constantly talking about it, so how can I not know that it exists?

he was condemning a kid for wearing a hoodie ? Condemning ?....Where did he condemn someone ? He didn't sound in favor of his kid wearing the "gangsta uniform"

and claimed that is that brought trouble his way. ?....and you're saying it didn't bring trouble his way, is that right ?

LOL, Righties insist that "racism" means being accused of racism, apparently.
I thought racism was about singling out people because of their different skin tone and making them feel inadequate or out of place; perhaps even treating them special because of their race.
