Under section 6104 of the GIVE Act, entitled Duties, in subsection B6, the legislation states that a commission will be set up to investigate whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges.

One may ask, “What�s the big deal about kids doing some good for their community?” There is one very simple answer for this�”What�s the big deal with your kids being OWNED by an omnipotent government?” What a wonderful example of its delights the Germans and their drilled and trained wunderkinder left us? Mandatory involuntary service shall set us all free!
 
There is no way they could make them mandatory. If my kid wanted to protest by tearing up his 'mandatory service card' he has every right to.

Another one of the reasons why I did not vote for Obama was his insistence on "service" for America's youth which he professed many times.

Whether this particular piece of legislation has his approval or not, I am opposed to ANY mandatory service for America's youth and I stand firmly against his desire to figure out what our youth should be doing with their time.

He's the president, not the Godfather.

Although the title is misleading because he calls for military or some other service .. it's still a slippery-slope and if Bush had proposed this the outrage would be deafening.

There is no mandatory service requirement in the legislation.

"Mandatory Youth Srvice" Bill Advances

Congress appears ready to pass an Obama administration plan that could create mandatory public service requirements for all American youth, fulfilling a campaign promise.

The bill, HR 1388: The Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, otherwise known as the "GIVE Act," has already passed the House by a vote of 321-105.

On Tuesday, the Senate voted closure on the motion to proceed by a margin of 74-14 in a move that makes its ultimate passage likely.

The bill, promoted by the Obama administration as a means of encouraging America's youth to participate in voluntary community service, has received little scrutiny from Congress or the public.

Yet, a version of the bill in the House proposes to establish a Congressional Commission on Civil Service tasked with determining whether a mandatory service requirement for all young people in America could be developed and implemented, though it is not clear that provision will survive a conference committee.
