The President is not calling for new legislation. He's simply calling for more stringent enforcement of present legislation and he is trying for more funding for the mental health facilities. He's on solid ground. Some of you idiots around here are just whining about it. You have no grounding for your complaints.

So how hard would that be? The police over here appear to have no problem doing just that. I frankly do not see why somebody applying for a firearms licence shouldn't be required to go to a doctor and get a certificate declaring they are mentally fit. What illnesses would be considered as grounds for refusal, well obviously schizophrenia would be top of the list as would bipolar disorder, drug addiction, psychotic behaviour, suicide attempts and personality disorders. Obviously to be truly effective, the certificate would have to be renewed periodically. Even better, the onus should be on doctors to report any future behaviour to the police to update their records with financial penalties for not doing so.

Congress claims the power to write laws on the manufacture, distribution, sale and possession of guns because of a strained interpretation of the "commerce clause" -- Article I § 8, cl. 3, granting Congress a power, "To regulate commerce . . . among the several states,. . . "

According to Article II, the Executive's only interest in the exercise of that power is to sign the bills passed by Congress and then seeing that those laws are "faithfully executed".

Is it really your opinion that because the President is derelict in his duty and unfaithfully executing the laws already in force, and Obama feels that Congress is not writing the new gun control bills he wants to sign, that the President can assume extra-constitutional powers to "expand" what Congress has set-out -- and in the case of the Social Security dispossession, invent a new prohibition criteria beyond 922(g)(1-9) (147kb PDF)?

You need a doctor's certificate to get a driver's license here and people just accept that as the price they have to pay.

This isvjust stupid. With more than 60% of the racial divide, of course inbraw numbers white crime is more prevalent. BUT in violence with guns per capita, it is far and away a problem for mostly black gangs in inner city populations.
