Obama and Reid: against raising debt ceiling

Obama in 2006:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

Reid in 2006:

“If my Republican friends believe that increasing our debt by almost $800 billion today and more than $3 trillion over the last five years is the right thing to do, they should be upfront about it. They should explain why they think more debt is good for the economy.

“How can the Republican majority in this Congress explain to their constituents that trillions of dollars in new debt is good for our economy? How can they explain that they think it’s fair to force our children, our grandchildren, our great grandchildren to finance this debt through higher taxes. That’s what it will have to be. Why is it right to increase our nation’s dependence on foreign creditors?

“They should explain this. Maybe they can convince the public they’re right. I doubt it. Because most Americans know that increasing debt is the last thing we should be doing. After all, I repeat, the Baby Boomers are about to retire. Under the circumstances, any credible economist would tell you we should be reducing debt, not increasing it. Democrats won’t be making argument to supper this legalization, which will weaken our country. Weaken our county.”

the intellectual dishonesty is appalling...for now they argue the exact opposite

No, the reality of the office hit them in the ass, he was obviously grand standing because he knew that his vote would not make a difference.

Now as President he understands that deficit reduction requires others means and to not raise the debt ceiling would be to shut down the government and that didn't work the last time we tried it!

so everything he said is not true? reid is still a senator...and being president doesn't give one special insight to the budget that he wouldn't have as a senator...thats nonsense

he is intellectual dishonest, he said raising the debt ceiling is a failure of leadership, makes our country weak, unfair to future generations....now because he wants to spend money because he is in the WH, its all of a sudden the opposite

So crucify him! Imagine, a politician saying something and then doing the opposite, oh, my , my day is ruined!

Of course, the Republicans were in favor or raising the debt ceiling then (with the exception of probably Tom Coburn) and are agin it now.

The Democrats will say but 2006 is different from now and increasing debt by enacting new spending commitments while cutting taxes is what we were really opposed to, not the debt ceiling per se. And deficit spending during a recession or recovery like now is necessary while deficit spending during times of economic growth is stupid.

The Republicans will say that they made mistakes in the past and are not required to repeat them now and that, yes, 2006 is different from now. Then we had X in deficits and now we have X times eleventy billion.

Personally, I think the debt ceiling is stupid. Congress passes spending bills. Passing a separate debt ceiling resolution in addition to the spending makes no practical sense.

you're the one making excuses for him...according to him raising our debt ceiling will make us a weaker nation, is a sign of failed leadershiip and is unfair to our children

but since he is a dem, you want to minimize it, if it was a pub you would be one the crucifying them and you know it

do you think obama and reid are being hypocrital and intellectually dishonest? i think the pubs who were for it then and are against it now are....

There it is! Where are the lefties now? Huh? Huh?

Where are they?

Yurt, the Repubs did it too, they threatened government shut down and now that they have won their seats they are backing off real fast!

It would create havoc in the market and it would leave Iraq and Afghanistan soldiers in a terrible lurch!

They would be so many people affected by a shut down, it would be worse for the economy if done at this time, plus they Republicans also know it would ruin their chances in 2012! They keep McConnell talking about it as a negotiation tool. I think the Dems should call the Republican bluff and let them shut it down! The scream from Wall Street will be so loud they will hear it in China!

As Nigel wrote the circumstances are different. Let's try an analogy.

Let's say a guy is going through a mid-life crisis and wants to buy a convertible. :) The Mrs. doesn't think it's a good idea to go into debt, raise their debt ceiling.

A couple of years later their roof starts to leak. The Mrs. tells her husband to call a roofer. The husband then replies, "But you said we shouldn't take on any more debt."

Does the husband's remark make sense? See the difference?

i wonder where the little hack is to call you out on this...oh wait, you're a dem so he won't

i already said the pubs are hypocrites on it....why is it you can't call obama and reid out but yet can call the pubs out?

according to obama it would make a weak nation, it is a sign of failed leadership, it is unfair to our children....but oh no, none of that matters now

thats a horrible analogy, its not even close....the issue is the same today as it was then

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. like obama said, its a sign the government can't pay its own bills, and we need foreign money to finance our government's reckless fiscal policies. that was true then and its true now.
