Oakland prepping for massive surveillance and police state

After initiating disarmament for it's citizens, Oakland now accepts a 2 million dollar grant from the feds for expanding their surveillance center to monitor the port of Oakland area.

After the Oakland City Council approved the surveillance center, also known as the Domain Awareness Center, in the early morning hours, the council’s audience began chanting “Shame! Shame” as many residents feel the center will infringe on privacy rights.

To ease civil liberty concerns, the city council approved some early safeguards, including not including video feeds from Oakland city schools and the coliseum. They also required that video not be recorded until the city council decides on privacy concerns in the spring.

“The privacy policies will be vetted and we’ve also enumerated what sources are in fact part of this phase,” said Oakland City Councilmember Libby Schaff. “Just to be clear, this does not involve cameras from Oakland schools. That was a controversial issue and we’ve made clear that that is not a part of this process at this time.”

City Council President Pat Kernighan said Monday that she supported the program because it would help Port of Oakland, police and fire officials work better together to respond to emergencies such as fires, earthquakes and hazardous material spills.

But American Civil Liberties Union attorney Linda Lye sent a letter to the council urging it to withhold approval for now because of "significant privacy concerns" because she believed it would "allow for widespread warrantless surveillance of Oakland residents."

Lye said the center as currently proposed "allows for the collection and stockpiling of comprehensive information about Oakland residents who have engaged in no wrongdoing whatsoever and lacks any binding privacy protections."

After the council approved the proposal, the ACLU released a statement saying in part that “The Oakland City Council last night made the unfortunate decision of approving a vast surveillance center that could be used for warrantless surveillance of Oakland residents who have engaged in no wrongdoing.”
