Several.

a) It might kill many innocent persons, hundreds of thousands at least, perhaps millions.

b) Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) *

c) Even if there was enough of something left of the United States after such a blunder, it would render the United States a pariah. We would be lowest man on the totem pole at the U.N. for at least a generation.
Look how long ago the Nazi Holocaust was, and Germany is still paying a heavy price for it; welcoming refugees that have been prominent in the news as recently as yesterday.

d) Without invoking the supernatural, its' bad karma, and it's a bell that could never be unrung.
It would be a blunder far beyond Biblical proportions.

* Do not assume that in a total nuclear exchange (T.N.E.) if all the mushroom clouds you see are on the distant horizon, that you will have survived.
The protocol for releasing such weapons is in waves. So it won't necessarily mean you won't die; only that it hasn't happened quite yet.
