NFL rejects rule change that would force players to stand for the national anthem
Owners met with players on Tuesday and discussed ways they can work together for positive change on social issues.

All eyes have been on NFL players who are protesting police brutality and racial inequality during the national anthem. On Tuesday, NFL owners decided against a mandate that would have required players to stand for the anthem going forward. There will be no rule change, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

There apparently wasn’t even a vote that took place among owners ..

On Tuesday, commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters at a press conference, “We believe everyone should stand for the national anthem, it’s an important part of our game.” He also stressed that he understood the concerns of the players, and that he felt the league could help them combat the societal issues.

On Monday, the Congressional Black Caucus wrote a letter to the NFL in support of players who protest during the national anthem. The letter invoked Dr. Martin Luther King’s Letter From a Birmingham Jail to white clergymen who were opposed to racial injustice but disagreed with the method of civil rights protests in 1963.

Dr. King hoped in his letter that those he was writing to would see the “justice of our cause,” and I hope the same for you and others. I understand your discomfort with kneeling during the National Anthem, but please understand our pain―pain that we as African Americans have carried since we were first brought to this country on slave ships.

Now these protests can continue with no official repercussions for players.

The rules already require it.
America tells NFL fuck you.
This gravy train is off the rails. Let's see who this hurts.

A. The rules do not currently require it.

B. If the rules already require it, why did they meet to discuss making a rule?

C. If so, why isn't that rule being enforced?

D. If the rules require it, why did Jerry Jones have to make up his own?

E. Did your read the title of this thread?

Next question .. If your side is so powerful and the NFL is being so roundly rejected, why isn't the league down 30% instead of 7.5%?

NFL ratings down 7.5% as Goodell says league won't force players to stand
October 18, 2017

Many have blamed the decline on this year’s national anthem protests, during which players have knelt during the pre-game singing of the Star-Spangled Banner to call attention to racial injustice in the United States. Trump called players who protest “sons of bitches”, and surveys have shown a majority of white fans disapprove of the movement (in contrast, black fans are generally supportive). However, it is unclear how big a part player protests have played in the drop: Nascar drivers and teams have not joined in the protests – indeed, some owners are openly hostile to the movement – but viewing figures have fallen just as steeply.

Trump's ugly battles with the NFL go way back

There was Pete Rozelle, the NFL's longtime commissioner.

There was Donald Trump, Manhattan-based real estate mogul and owner of the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League, which was in its second year.

There was Leslie Schupak, senior managing partner at KCSA Worldwide, the USFL's marketing and public relations firm. I spoke with Schupak on multiple occasions last year as I was reporting my eighth book, a look back at the long-defunct USFL.

The meeting, held in March 1984, concerned Trump's desire to possess an NFL franchise. Although he owned the Generals and spoke publicly of his love for the USFL, Trump (according to many people who knew him) anxiously wanted to ditch the upstart for the money and fame of the bigger league. Hence, said Schupak, Trump invited Rozelle (a man he knew casually through scattered social encounters) to meet, and had Schupak -- with whom he had bonded -- tag along.

Schupak remembered it well. "They arrive, and even before Pete can stop talking on a casual basis, Donald starts his diatribe on how great he (Trump) would be for the NFL, and what it would mean to the NFL to have him as a franchise owner," he said. "Donald is going on in his typical style, telling Pete Rozelle what he believes in, why he would be wonderful. It was typical Donald, in that Rozelle couldn't get a word in."

According to Schupak, Rozelle, who died in 1996, seemed to be under the impression Trump extended the invite to discuss relations between the two leagues. When he realized what Trump was after, he turned cold and blunt. "Mr. Trump," Rozelle told him, according to Schupak, "as long as I or any of my heirs are involved in the NFL, you will never be a franchise owner in the league."

The meeting ended shortly thereafter. Not surprisingly, Trump remembered the meeting very differently, in testimony he gave in 1984 during the USFL's antitrust case against the NFL (which we will get back to shortly). Trump told jurors that Rozelle promised him an NFL franchise.

He did not get one. Donald Trump was never a franchise owner in the NFL.

So essentially, the NFL is saying fuck you to Donald Trump AGAIN.

Pfffttthhhhh!!!!! :rofl2:

When I start seeing half full or less stadiums every Sunday from now until January I'll believe that nonsense.

But we all know that there just ain't no way in hell Americans are going to abandon their number one favorite spectator sport over something most people don't really care that much about.

Stop and think about it for a minute... how many football fans across the US, sitting in their living rooms in front of their TV sets, bother to put down their beer and stop stuffing nachos into their faces long enough to stand up for the anthem themselves?

Almost none of them.

So, what else is new? Whatever these bitter self-serving jocks do doesn't mean squat to the average working joe...we have real lives to live...all entertainers have their own world with angry little lives to live, swearing and cursing at everybody and filled with hate. Go for it.

Interesting characterization of guys who are risking their careers to stand up for equal rights for those less advantaged than they are.

When was the last time you put down your pizza and beer and stood up for the anthem as a game was starting?

Oh wait, you've never done it.

GTFOH.

Why didn't they enforce the rule ? The were scared and hoped it would go away. It didn't.
Stands are empty but next season those season tix will be hard to sell. 7.5 is enough to cost them tv money which pays the players.

Why do you care what rules a private business enforces or doesn't enforce? Do you police other companies to make sure they're adhering to internal guidelines?

Will it be another feather in Trump's cap if he can ruin a multi billion $ American business?

Wrong again LittleThingy; the one's ruining the multi-billion dollar business are the NFL owners and whiny millionaire dumbfucks who think taking a knee is not flipping the bird at America.

But you snowflakes run with it. We'll see how that plays out in the midterms and next Presidential elections.

A. If "stands were empty" the NFL would be down a lot more than 7.5%.

B. Why isn't NASCAR booming? It' down from 12-15% and struggling to find sponsors.

C. If your predictions are baseless this season, why would you think anyone would care about what you predict for next season?

NASCAR has been fading for several years due to popular drivers retiring and no replacements.
Tickets for this season are already sold, there are not that many available. Resellers are paying that price this year. They won't be buying next year.
Why would anyone care what you think as you clearly don't understand how this business works ?

:0) That's funny considering that you don't understand that all sports .. including the NFL .. have been declining in attendance for several years .. none of which has anything to do with kneeling for the national anthem.

That had to do with BOs horrible economy which oddly enough put blacks out of work and in greater contact with the law.
Notacible drop off thx to lack of action by the NFL regardless of your tangents
