The Force is With Me
After receiving letters from Republican senators urging it to stay out of a political fight, the National Football League said Friday that it will not work with administration officials on the effort. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius suggested earlier that the league was enthusiastic to help.

The Washington Post: NFL Says No To Promoting Obamacare
The National Football League is used to big, bruising battles. But on Friday, it announced that it was likely staying out of one of the roughest fights in Washington: the war over Obamacare (Somashekhar and Bernstein, 6/28).

CNN Money: NFL Has 'No Plans' To Promote Obamacare
The National Football League has "no plans" to work with the Obama administration in educating the public about the president's controversial health care reform, according to an NFL spokesman. ... The top two Republicans in the Senate cautioned the league against teaming up for the project, saying in a letter Friday the NFL would "risk damaging" its nonpartisan reputation by getting involved in a highly divisive issue (Killough, 6/28).

The Wall Street Journal: NFL Balks At Supporting Health Law After GOP Senators Send Warning
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told reporters at the beginning of last week that the National Football League was "enthusiastically engaged" in talks to help promote health insurance. By the week's end, the NFL had contradicted that statement, saying it "currently (has) no plans to engage in this area" after receiving a public warning from Republican Senate leaders, who also fired off letters to five other professional sports leagues suggesting they avoid promoting the Affordable Care Act. The letters were cosigned by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Texas Sen. John Cornyn (Schatz, 6/30).

Politico: Mitch McConnell Asks Pro Sports To Stay Away From Obamacare Promotion
Two top Senate Republicans have sternly warned the leaders of the NFL and other sports leagues against wading into the politically volatile waters of Obamacare. "Given the divisiveness and persistent unpopularity of the health care [law], it is difficult to understand why an organization like yours would risk damaging its inclusive and apolitical brand by lending its name to its promotion," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican Whip John Cornyn wrote in letters to the commissioners of the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, PGA and the chairman and chief executive officer of NASCAR. A spokesman for the NFL responded Friday evening to say the league has no plans at this time to work with HHS on health law (Haberkorn, 6/28).

... ooppss

This is quite sad that they even went to the sports leagues in the first place. Seems like they are trying to use the popularity of the leagues to get the public on board with the ACA. Apparently the politicians backing the plan cannot explain well enough on their own? Let me guess, they found out what was in the plan and are now realizing the public is not going to like it (as we have seen in poll after poll). Let me guess, wealthy celebrities will be endorsing it next?

Yeah, heaven forbid that the public would be informed about the law and what benefits may be available to them. If the House weren't run by a bunch of petulant children the government would actually put some money towards a public information campaign so that people knew what the fuck was going on. But, petulant children is what we have. Thus, having no funds to available to put towards a public information campaign HHS has reached out to high profile businesses and organizations to assist with the efforts. And, again, Republicans being petulant children who don't give a good goddamn about their constituents, pressure those high profile businesses and organizations not to participate because heaven forbid people actually learn about the law and how it may affect thm.

How about if Obama had not stood between the American public and single-payer, none of this would be necessary?

Do you think he's going to tell the public .. in his information plan .. that he stood between them and a system that was already in place and is one of the most popular programs in American history with an infrastructure already in place?

You think he going to tell them that?

Do you think he's going to tell them that it's a plan that requires young and healthy to sign up or the whole thing fails .. thus, it is entirely dependent on a segment of society that is already struggling with unemployment, under-employment, and the rising costs of education?

Do you think he's going to tell them that it's Mitt Romney's plan?

It's a clusterfuck and they know it.

Obama admin puts the heat on the NBA to help sell Obamacare

The Obama administration has reportedly tried to enlist the NBA in helping it sell Obamacare to the American people.
It’s unclear whether a potential marketing partnership would put big-name players at the center of ad campaigns or if it would be as simple as putting the NBA trademark on marketing materials, Politico first reported today.

People can begin signing up for Obamacare in October, with the new insurance coverage kicking in next year. Many have speculated that the enrollment campaigns would benefit from a celebrity endorsement or partnership with a major sports league.

“You just can’t be a smoker and be obese or heavy … and be a basketball player. These folks are kind of the picture of youth and health, and in some ways, that’s the target audience,” said Jon Kingsdale, who oversaw the implementation of the Massachusetts health law — which was boosted by the Boston Red Sox, Politico reported.

Officials with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services declined to comment on talks with the NBA, Politico said. “We are speaking with a wide range of potential partners and organizations about our efforts to inform Americans of the opportunity to enroll in quality, affordable coverage in the health insurance marketplaces,” an agency spokesman said.

I like you too brother .. but I love my children and grand-children. I've gotta speak honestly about the fraud of Obama and his corporatist healthcare plan. The futures of our children are dependent on the actions or inactions of this generation.

I mean nothing personal to anyone .. especially good people like you.

Any criticisms you may have will not change my respect for you .. in fact, I welcome them.

Well, it's just our basic diagreement about (1) whether Medicare for all (or even a public option) was viable and (2) whether the ACA, flawed as it is, is an improvement over the status quo. I'd prefer not to rehash all of that in every thread about the ACA.

Understood.

:0) .. but ..

1. Of course it was but Obama didn't want it .. and said so
2. It's not an improvement if it doesn't work.

lmao... are you suggesting the politicians are unable to inform the public without using sports teams to endorse it?

This is your problem, you know the public won't like what is in the plan. They have had how many years to highlight it? They have appeared on how many shows to try and explain it. yet the problem for you is that the public likes the ACA less and less the more they learn about the plan. Hence the celebrity endorsements or the attempt to get sports leagues to endorse it. They are trying to add credibility via celebrity pull.

I guess I can't fault the admin for trying to get some education out any way they can, but I can't escape a disastrous feeling about what Obamacare might do to the country.

There are good, viable ways to achieve a goal of universal healthcare. I think proponents will rue the paths not taken once all is said & done on this one.
