New polls on who we are

I know. It's scary as all hell too. My dad died from this, and the doctors told us that you can hit your head getting into your car, and die six months later. It's rare, it will usually happen within hours or days, but that can actually happen. If we knew everything that could go wrong for us, I swear, none of us would get out of bed in the mornings.

Isn't your last sentence the truth!

There have been instances of death from a simple sneeze. There is no possible way to avoid death. Impermanence is part of my belief system.

No, I know. But no one wants to die at 45. I'm just saying that I felt really grateful for today, and I rarely take the time to feel that. It would be good to remember to do so.

This is going to be my excuse for why I'm an alcoholic! Seriously, there are times when sitting at home when I'm debating should I go out or not and I honestly think tommorow is not guaranteed so have fun tonight and see if you meet someone.

SS works to an extent but its so fucked up now its the reason why people want privatization (which i dont necessarily agree with)..

The problem is how fucked up the system is. The number is ridiculously high for the benefits. Think about it. Say a woman works from 1997 for 45 years with an avg salary of like 150k (taking into consideration inflation) over the 45years of his career. Shes put virtually 1M into SS. She will get a laughable fraction of that back as a benefit.

Its broken and needs to be fixed. I dont care if its a lifetime SS contribution limit, bucketing age groups, or whatever. Something needs to happen.

That's right! Nothing could possibly go wrong thinking (herpes) like this! I'm with you Cawacko!

Kinda like me paying auto insurance for 40 years and only claiming one minor accident?

Darn I want my premiums back! And I have never had a homeowners insurance claim.

SS is not a retirement plan but a safety stop to prevent older / disabled people who did not prepare for retirement from starving to death.

Did you see that your friend the Train Engineer has been spreading Herpes everywhere in NYC? Dano posted something about it being the epicenter of a huge epidemic. I figure since no woman can stop herself from climbing all over Fat Train Engineers who are married.... Well it HAS to be that guy.

LOL

No, I have not heard of this "epidemic". But a lot of people who don't live in NY believe that everyone in NY has herpes or HIV. People who do live in NY know that's it's the Southerners you have to look out for. Not that they ever score here anyway.

Only insane southerners would even try to score in NY.

I have to go, I'm really busy, I got a new, big client i am doing PR for. It's kinda scary because it's so big, and what if i mess up? I scored this at a professional women's networking event, which just goes to show that 90% of life really is just showing up.

See you guys.

I don't know about you but I have life, auto, home, umbrella, and other riders for like 3grand a year. I have zero problem paying insurance because it protects me against catastrophic loss for a cheap price. 135K over 45years is far different then 1M and getting squat in return.

Showing up... exactly what I said!! You said it scored you a big account and will score me herpes. That is sexist!!!!

Darla you sexist pig!!!

Hi bac. Your last sentence made me think of Natasha Richardson. Everyone always says, oh you should be thankful for every day. But how many really feel it? Today, I felt it. I wish I could remember to feel it everyday. I'm going to try to. I felt so bad. A stupid little fall. You just have to hit the ground in the absolute wrong way. Can happen in your own home...easily.

Anyway, good points. You are right and Damo is wrong, so I see nothing has changed? ;)

Missing you here.

The day I died I felt just as healthy as I've felt all my life. The only indication that this could be the last day of my life was the behavior of my dog who was trying to tell me .. dude, you're about to die on me.

The good news is not only that I came back, but that I came back relatively whole and didn't become a drain on my family. I would have rather stayed dead than become a burden.

The part our friend Damo keeps missing is that his own healthcare, or that of his wife or child, could destroy all the best plans of mice and men. Do well if you can and most assuredly plan for retirement, but do all you can to ensure SS is there if you need it. That is it's original intent.

Which my proposal does nothing to change. It's a straw man, and a weak one to suggest it does. It is unendingly ridiculous to suggest that letting the people who choose to do so take a small portion to invest in specific things is the same thing as attempting to kill the government insurance program.

Some people will not save, I fully comprehend that. Some of those people (who would not otherwise be able to save), given the choice, will choose to invest a portion of that insurance and risk a smaller insurance payout in the end for the greater return and the ability to pass to their relative some small thing.

What you suggest might indeed work for you, but it's not you I'm talking about, it's American seniors, many of whom are not as astute about money and/or investments as you may be. Personally, I invest in my company and the success of my retirement is largely dependant on the success of my business and our savings .. but what works for me may not work for everyone or even the majority of people. I do not see life from the perspective of the individual, rather through the perspective of what's best for society .. and there is no doubt in my mind that SS works far better for society than either your plan or mine .. and again, you cannot forsee your health.

There is absolutely no way that privatization (full or otherwise) of Social Security could be accomplished over night. We owe an obligation to Senior Citizens and those who have worked for years to give them a return on their SS taxes fair or otherwise.

I am one who believes that SS should eventually be fully privatized, but that will take at least one generation to make happen. We would have to wean ourselves off of the teat of the government in this case. I do not believe that contributions should be voluntary either. I believe they should be deducted from every paycheck and placed into a fund in your name not the government's wallet.

Although, I do believe that a fund for people who become disabled or pass away early in life should replace the fund. We would need to provide a backup fund for those who before they are able to retire end up unable to work and provide for their families.

Immie

OK you complete fucking idiot they did not do the POLLS.

There are two polls and there are links to both of them.

Pay attention or shut the fuck up.

You are such a bonehead its breathtaking....

Two new studies (here and here) conducted by the Progressive Studies Program at the Center for American Progress break down the electorate on a new 5-point scale of political ideology that reflects the primary approaches people ascribe to today. Under this schematic, 34 percent of the country self-identifies as ‘conservative’, 29 percent as ‘moderate’, 15 percent as ‘liberal’, 16 percent as ‘progressive’, and 2 percent as ‘libertarian’.

One doesn't really need a poll to recognize we are not a center-right nation .. and polls, as imperfect as they may be, often accurately reflect the sentiments they've arrived at. People tend to ignore and dispute polls they don't like .. not saying this is what you're doing .. but polls have been a reliable benchmark of public opinion for many years. Not perfect, but polls that tend to arrive at the same conclusion over years are often quite accurate .,. as with healthcare.

Social Security is the bedrock safety-net for seniors in the US .. without which many couldn't afford to stay alive.

Imagine if this nation had been foolish ebough to privatize SS and GAMBLE on the stock market?

Lots of people claim they'll be prepared for retirement, but nobody has a crystal ball to see that for sure. There are lots of people who thought that before catastrophe hit. Healthcare costs are the leading cause of personal bankruptcy .. and you can't forsee the future of your health or a loved one.

Better to keep SS just as it is .. but make politicians leave it alone.

Also, I don't share this fear of "government."

Here again is another one for you to look at Desh... the old 'well if we had privatized SS then where would we be now after the market fell so hard'

PRIVATIZATION DOES NOT MEAN THE MONEY HAS TO GO INTO THE STOCK MARKET.

It means the money is no longer under the control of the idiots in DC.

I'm no dummy brother and neither are you. To suggest that there are factors that you cannot see when planning for your retirement is absolutely relevant when discussiing planning for your retirement .. THUS, a reliable safety-net is critical for the health and well-being of American citizens.

No one is denying that making good plans foir retirement is essential because no one wants to have to rely on SS for their dole source of income in retiurement .. but we aren't talking about the best laid plans, we're talking about people, and there are a great many of them .. especially today, who have made all the best laid plans, then find themselves hurting for income to survive, which ususally happens because of unforseen health issues.

If you're so intenet on "saving a small portion to invest" .. what's stopping you? Surely you can manage to save a smallportion from what you already spend to invest ,, and leave the portion you contribute to SS alone just iun case your best laid plans don't work out .. of which you have NO GUARANTEE.

That would seeem to me to be the real best laid plans.

The strawman here is the false notion that the only "small portion" you have is what you contribute to SS.
