New French law bans grocers from throwing away food.!!

A couple of things:

1. Isn't it prudent to throw away food that is spoiled? We have a Food and Drug Administration to monitor such things. And frankly, with the French devotion to cleanliness and hygiene being questionable, is this such a good thing?

2. If France is such a wonderful liberal/socialist utopian economy, why are there people struggling to eat? They should all be fat and on diets, if that country is so effing prosperous.
It is past the best by date, not the sell by date.

see how stupid you are

Aug 21 (Reuters) - Americans throw away nearly half their food every year, waste worth roughly $165 billion annually, according to a study released on Tuesday.

"As a country, we're essentially tossing every other piece of food that crosses our path. That's money and precious resources down the drain," said Dana Gunders, a scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council's food and agriculture program.

The NRDC report said Americans discard 40 percent of the food supply every year, and the average American family of four ends up throwing away an equivalent of up to $2,275 annually in food.

Just a 15 percent reduction in losses in the U.S. food supply would save enough to feed 25 million Americans annually. It also would lighten the burden on landfills, where food waste makes up the largest component of solid waste, according to the NRDC, a nonprofit environmental organization.

Particularly worrisome, the organization said, was evidence that there has been a 50 percent jump in U.S. food waste since the 1970s. Unsold fruits and vegetables in grocery stores account for a big part of the wasted food.

But consumers and restaurants are also to blame, preparing large portions that result in leftovers that often go uneaten.

The NRDC said it is asking for the U.S. government to study losses in the food system and set goals for waste reduction.

"No matter how sustainably our food is farmed, if it's not being eaten, it is not a good use of resources," said Gunders. (Reporting by Carey Gillam; Editing by Dan Grebler)

cons hate FACTS

I makes them really really stupid and Constantly WRONG

I'd rather a grocery store donate food out of good will or public pressure than to have a central government make it mandatory. There is a lot of wasted food in this country and so that is definitely a problem but when we have that much wasted food every year then it could be that we are overproducing for a demand that isn't really there. When you go to a grocery store especially in the fruit and vegetable area there is always way too much displayed that will never be sold. If the store is overbuying then they should figure out a way to reduce what they are selling. I know that farmers want to sell as much of their crop as possible too but there has to be a middle ground somewhere. On the flip side there are also restaurants that are way too wasteful, especially buffets. If they are throwing away hundreds of pounds of food everyday as well then they need to figure out a way to make changes themselves which will ultimately save them money in my opinion. Having all that extra waste food given out to those that are possibly in need helps one problem but it doesn't really solve the main problem in my opinion which is overproduction and irresponsible ways of selling and displaying the food. If this happened here in this country i'd prefer it come from the local or state government since they understand that areas food production better than the federal government.

sometimes good people have to force bad people NOT to do evil for money

Pretending that is not true will make you stupid and wrong every time

I'm sure there are also alot of health codes and laws for these stores and restaurants to go by and so I don't think them throwing away all of their extra food is evil as much as it is out of necessity or irresponsibility. If they didn't display as much fruits and vegetables and if restaurants didnt over buy for their kitchens and then put out so much food that there is no way that it will ever get eaten then there also wouldn't be as much wasted food and by making those changes it wouldn't be necessary for the government try and step in. There are alot of places that already donate extra food without being forced to do it but I think that many of these stores just probably dont have the time or ability, but that sort of thing can be fixed by the store owners and managers in my opinion. If the problem is that too much food is being thrown away then the solution is to not have so much food displayed or cooked that would then need to be thrown away after a day if nobody buys it. I like the idea of this food going to the homeless and people in need but there has to be a better way in my opinion than to have government involved in yet another thing.

its placing only money as value

its short sighted thinking

Its acting without thinking everything through as much as possible.

when liberals ask you to go by facts and think things all he way through don't pretend we have no right to do so

Is forcing stores to donate leftover food "thinking it all the way through" or is that just one way out of many of trying to fix the problem?

seems ok to me to give it away, waste not want not as they say.....

Might work in other countries; but here in the good ole USA, we have way to many people who just can't wait to sue someone over something that they would claim made them sick.
