LAS VEGAS (July 9) — U.S. Sen. John Ensign's parents gave the Nevada Republican's mistress and her family nearly $100,000 "out of concern for the well being of longtime family friends during a difficult time," an attorney for the senator said Thursday.
In a statement sent to reporters, Paul Coggins described the payment as a single check for $96,000 given to Cindy and Doug Hampton and two of their children. It was given in April 2008, Coggins said, after the senator told his parents of his affair with Cindy Hampton, a campaign aide and longtime friend.

The scandal over Sen. John Ensign's extramarital affair intensified Thursday, when it emerged that the Nevada Republican's parents gave his former lover, Cindy Hampton, and her family $96,000. An attorney for the senator said the money was given "out of concern for the well being of longtime family friends." Here, Ensign acknowledges the affair at a June 16 press conference.

"None of the gifts came from campaign or official funds, nor were they related to any campaign or official duties," the statement said. "Sen. Ensign has complied with all applicable laws and Senate ethics rules."
The statement comes a day after Doug Hampton told a Las Vegas television show that Ensign paid Cindy Hampton more than $25,000 in severance when she left her job as treasurer for two Ensign-controlled campaign committees.
Ensign had not commented directly on allegations of a payments to the Hamptons, but through a spokesman called Doug Hampton's statements "consistently inaccurate."
A Washington watchdog group has said such a payment could have violated campaign finance laws because it was not reported by the committees.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has sought a Senate ethics investigation and on Thursday sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder asking for a criminal probe of the matter.

This sounds credible and very believable.

I'm sure his Mommy and Daddy forked over 100 grand out of sincere concern for the mistress' well being. 100 grand can buy a whole lot of "well being".

Calm down USC, who doesn't run to Mommy and Daddy for help in getting out of a jam with a chick?

"Hey, did you hear" that Sen. Coburn.(R-OK) was involved in aiding the Ensign cover up? "Did you hear" it went right up to the point of suggesting the pay-off of the Hampton mortgage in exchange for silence.
Ain't this fun?

no it ain't fun...we in both parties should be kicking a lot of these crooks and scumbags out of office..

BTW TuTu, if you look at today's Presidential Tracking Poll you will see a new number for the Obama index, it has changed a bit.

I'm sure this is great comfort to Ensign .. given as how it is so critical to his case .. and this thread.

Let me go WAAAYYY out on a limb and add a poll that I think might be just a bit more germaine to the real issue of this thread and Ensign .. who voted to impeach Clinton for his BJ, but doesn't want to give up his office .. you know like Larry Craig and David Vitter ...

.. AND who gave this speech in 2004 on the .. <giggles> .. santicty of marriage. .. <more giggles>

"Marriage recognizes the ideal of a father and mother living together to raise their children,” Ensign said. “Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded. For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply point out that marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation. Marriage, as a social institution, predates every other institution on which ordered society in America has relied.”

That shit is funny.

But onto those poll numbers I spoke of ..

GOP Watch: Ensign's Numbers take a dive

After his admitted affair, John Ensign's favorability rating has taken a hit: It now stands at 39% favorable, 37% unfavorable, per a Mason-Dixon poll conducted by the Las Vegas Journal Review. His fav is down 14 points and his unfav is up 19 points from the same poll conducted a month ago. But it's not all bad news for Ensign. More than six in 10 Nevadans do not think Ensign should resign.

It appears that his good news for Ensign is that Nevadans don't seem as hypocritical as he is.

Dude, I really don't care about Ensign, I posted an aside.

Jefferson is going to jail, and many, perhaps most of the Democrat consituents in his district voted for that republican Cao dude. That district is something like 80% democratic, and no way would Cao have won if Democrats didn't vote for him over the corrupt jefferson.

So, you efforts at pointing at "liberal hypocrisy" ends in an epic fail.

As for Kennedy, has he ever held himself out as a superior moral authority, or mocked drug users? In the way that Ensign, Gingrich, Diaper Dave Vitter professed outrage over clinton's sexual escapades, even as they engaged in their own sordid affairs? And even as they pronounced themselves and the republican party the guardians of virtue and family values?

Oh i see..because Kennedy never openly held himself up as having any morals, the means he is excused from leaving a girl to drown in his car..

I got it..

They should have voted for Jefferson and waited for the special election to come up. Nevertheless, the Republican is going to lose by a landslide in the next election.
