Neil Young / Spotify Protest Grows To Include Joni Mitchell

She's smart, as is Young. I think she's more indpendent, and Young is more of what we'd consider a liberal.

I kind of think the Spotify thing is weird and think they're going too far w/ it. But Young was one of the big voices against Vietnam & the gov't overstepping its bounds in the '60's. Being a pain in the ass can be effective.
good info on their politics -sounds correct.
The Spotify thing though .that comes from this cancel culture. Now it's being guise as misinformation.
Looking back on COVID, we had lot of "misinformation" ( wrong instructions)

extended lockdowns to masking stopping the spread and vaxxing mandates all were screw ups
It's to be expected in a pandemic, but shutting down opposing viewpoints as "misinformation"
is anathema to the process of scientific method

Spotify pays artists a pittance. Shut the whole thieving scam down.

I was reading that Neil Young likely is only losing a few dollars, that the owners of songs are the ones taking the hit.

I figure this makes Neil Young a Blow Hard.

There are performers royalties and writers royalties. The share-out is decided at the point of registration with the rights societies.

He couldn't have done shit without going to Warner Brothers and Reprise first.

[h=1]Neil Young couldn’t remove his music from Spotify on his own. Here’s why.[/h]
[h=2]So who owns Neil Young’s songs? [/h] Like many artists, Young was unable to independently pull his own music from Spotify because he was not fully in control of his licensing rights.
The licensing rights to Young’s music are owned by Warner Bros – Reprise Records, his record company. Warner Bros is in charge of striking deals with third parties, such as Spotify, which can reproduce Young’s work.

What Neil Young’s departure from Spotify means for investors in his music
As for Hipgnosis Songs Fund, the Blackstone-owned firm that bought a 50% stake in Young’s songwriting catalog for an estimated $150 million last year, they’ll likely see their investment in the artist’s music depreciate as well. “They were betting on recovering their massive investment through the continuing growth of streaming,” Howard says. Now any streaming royalties that Young and Hipgnosis were collecting from the world’s most popular streaming service will be gone.

Howard says he hopes this will serve as a wakeup call for investment firms that have been aggressively pursuing artists’ catalogs in recent years, with musicians from Bruce Springsteen to Stevie Nicks selling the rights to their music. “I hope this does send a chilling effect out through the marketplace so they stop viewing this art as just any other kind of commodity.”

Look at how he fucked over those who invested in his legacy....that's the kind of guy we are dealing with.

“I built Hipgnosis to be a company Neil would want to be a part of. We have a common integrity, ethos and passion born out of a belief in music and these important songs,” he said.

“There will never be a ‘Burger Of Gold’ but we will work together to make sure everyone gets to hear them on Neil’s terms.”

So they handed Neil $150 million and he still gets substantial control over the songs??

That seems rather dumb, maybe I have no pity.

Hello Dutch,

Spotify, like any other business with investors, will do whatever they think is most profitable.

TBH, I was never a Joni Mitchell fan but the loss of Neil Young cost me some songs on my playlist.

I love music. I never gave up on my own music collections, don't like for-profit corporations controlling my listening, and I am not big on putting personal information out on the internet, so I don't sign up for things like FB or Spotify. I control my own music listening. I've got Neil Young records and I've got Joni Mitchell records. I think they're both awesome, and I respect them both deeply for taking this stand.

Right on, Neil. Right on Joni. Let's have more. I bet if Tom Petty were still alive he would join in, too. What about Carole King? Carole, if you are seeing this, please take a stand? We could use the power of your voice on this.

There's no such thing as "free". FB isn't free since they are selling people's personal information. Pay services like Spotify have a fiduciary responsibility to their customers.

Hello Dutch,

It might cost me a song or two but if Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons and Enigma pull their stuff, it'll leave a big hole. Same for the Stones.

Well, I don't think you would have to worry about Clapton pulling his material, anyway. Great musician, but I disagree with him on a lot of issues.

Young's song 'Ohio' exposed Nixon for the fool he was. A situation like that could never happen again. That song came out when radio stations were not all owned by one big for-profit corporation and would play anything that was decent and popular. After they all got corporatized, political material control and political censorship followed. The whole big corporate music industry is now as plastic as vinyl.
