New Jersey strongly supports expanding background checks for gun purchases to keep firearms away from those who shouldn't have them, according to Mark Kelly, a retired astronaut, Navy captain and the husband of former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Kelly wrote in a recent opinion column on NJ.com that 96 percent of New Jerseyans support the tighter checks, including 95 percent of Garden State households where a gun is present.
