Navy Aircraft Carrier to Be Named for Black Pearl Harbor Veteran

Worth mentioning GUNO, what the sailor did was worthy of COURT MARTIAL. I don't know about all services but the NAVY at the time didn't allow skills/crafts/rates for black sailors in OPERATING GUNS!

"Justice" DELAYED is "JUSTICE" DENIED. MOST of these stories don't have happy endings. The US MILITARY systematically withheld AWARDS and MEDALS from Negroes and JEWS throughout and AFTER the 2nd WW. Depending on the tenacity, guts, relentlessness, resources of the families left behind to go through the 'paperwork/records', letter writings, appeal after appeal and shaming of the services and/or their elected officials, these stories rarely turned out well.

This was a fucking MIRACLE.

Negroes? Seriously?

A former GOP congressman’s fight to finally get a black World War II hero the Medal of Honor

Do to racism of that time, Doris Miller did not receive the Medal of Honor, and after shooting down four enemy planes, he went back to the ship's mess?!! Blacks were not allowed in combat arms positions in the segregated military?!!

For much of the past three decades, Joseph DioGuardi, a former Republican congressman from New York, has waged an often lonely crusade to persuade reluctant federal, military, and civilian officials to honor Doris “Dorie” Miller — an African-American hero of World War II and survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor — with a Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. military recognition.

On Friday, DioGuardi returns to Washington to try it once again. He plans to speak on a panel during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s annual meeting and, after lobbying there, he intends to work the convention hall, passing out literature to drum up support to press Congress and the White House to finally give Miller his overdue honor.

Out on the unread posts list, the last two words of the title were cut off, so, all I could see was "Black Pearl." Gave me an entire wrong impression of this thread.

hmm an aircraft carrier being named after a cook. We couldnt find any other black people with better achievments?

I mean we have plenty of destroyers etc for cooks but this is an aircraft carrier.

What the fuck does it matter what type ship is named after him? He is being honored for his valor and bravery under fire. Maybe if you had worn the uniform you might understand what courage truly is.

According to the article he posthumously was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary bravery that day, which included defending his ship and saving lives.

Aircraft carriers tend to be flagships and they have prestige.
