At least this way (NATO) Europeans are paying for some of their defense costs.
We further benefit from the availability of their soldiers.
Further the institution keeps the members as own allies.

NATO and the US

The US is terrified of communism- and it thinks that Russians are communists.

So- the US has constructed a gang of Euro mugs to serve as buffer zones between Russia and the US.
Unfortunately, NATO is so dumb that it refused Russia the same security- even though the Russians asked very nicely. Here we are.

You know, like we've been doing with UKR all these years thereby prompting this war.

Time to pull out of NATO faster than a man who sobers up suddenly pulls out of Desh and Darla.

I was thinking, why does the US need to be in NATO? We are the superpower. There is no benefit to us being in it that I see. The benefit is to the small countries which benefit being allied with us, the superpower.

It makes our military strength three times bigger, and allows us to forward deploy our military. Without NATO and other such alliances, we would not be a global superpower.

If we were not in NATO, we could assist Ukraine in this mess. But our hands our tied because of this NATO obligation, which I see no benefit from.

NATO is not keeping us from defending Ukraine. We are just unwilling to defend Ukraine, because it is not that important to us. I feel bad about that, but it is reality.

NATO is keeping us defending the NATO nations, and them defending us.

NATO invoked Article 5 for the first time in its history after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against the United States.

An attack on one is an attack against all, and we were the one being attacked.
