I say its gotta either be FEMA or the Army Corps of Engineers

I'll give a special bonus mention of the American Red Cross

I'd say it's a tie between all the ones based in Washington, D.C. and all the ones based in Washington, D.C.

You took the words right out of my mouth although I was just going to say, "It is a tie between every one of them for the lowest honors."

My apologies for this unfortunate and purely accidental theft on my part, I will endeavor to make sure it does not happen again (although I make no promises). :D

Or maybe I should just type faster! Yeah, that's right it took me four and a half hours to type my response and you beat me to it! :p

Does anybody out there have any memory of the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ..... during the Carter Administration?

The 'Department of Energy' was instituted on

8- 04-1977
TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

AND NOW IT'S 2008,

31 YEARS LATER ...

AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS

NECESSARY DEPARTMENT IS AT$24.2 BILLION A YEAR
IT HAS

* 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES AND APPROXIMATELY
* 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES

AND LOOK AT THE JOB IT HAS DONE!

THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY
'WHAT WAS I THINKING?'

Ah, yes, good ole bureaucracy..

And NOW we are going to turn the Banking System, health care & the Auto Industry over to them?

Ironically though one of the few things that the Carter Administration did right was it's energy policy, too bad the bureaucratic department that he created couldn't follow through with it.

It's an abject lesson in why it's always a bad idea to extend bureaucracy....

Carter established a clear goal. "Beginning this moment, this nation will never use more foreign oil than we did in 1977 -- never. From now on, every new addition to our demand for energy will be met from our own production and our own conservation." By the end of the 1980s, the nation would reduce "our dependence on foreign oil by one-half."

Didn't poor Jimmy realize what his own Dim Party was all about? Our demand met by our own production? What the hell was he thinking?
Dims drilling for oil, Dims building Nuclear Power plants, Dims promoting COAL, OIL from shale?....He lived in a fantasy that Dims would become energy Republicans...

To achieve these goals Carter requested of Congress "the most massive peacetime commitment of funds and resources in our nation's history to develop America's own alternative sources of fuel -- from coal, from oil shale, from plant products for gasohol, from unconventional gas, from the sun."

Poor Carter didn't realize he was a member of the bonehead party...but now we all know it....
