MSNBC Host: Word "Socialist" Code For The "N-Word"

If there was, as he suggested, remarks made about "lynching socialists", then I can see where he made the connection. For a black man in the US, the word "lynching" can only hold racial connotations.

If there was no remark made about lynching socialists, then this is another example of crying wolf.

pretty soon we will all have to ask permission on what we can say from our Dear Leaders..

No one is saying that the use of the word "socialist" is going to be outlawed.

But if we are to have a dialogue and accomplish anything, it is in the best interests of both sides that we are all aware of what certain words will mean to some people.

If we want to continue the rants and shouting matches that get us nowhere, then, by all means, ignore the other connotations of phrases.

I love how now it's "can't we all just get along"...
that certainly wasn't the case during the Bush Presidency, now was it..

It was for some of us. The screamers just get more press.

But suppose you are right. And now the republicans want payback. And next time it will be the democrats who want payback.

Unless you are saying that this screaming and shouting is productive, you are advocating getting nowhere.

Its not about getting along. Its about accomplishing something.

So when I called Bush a socialist because of the pill bill and his stance on free health care for those who used the emergency room as their local clinic I was supposedly calling him an "n-word"...

It's just a really inane attempt to stamp racist on anybody who criticizes the policies.

I didn't say what the reporter said was 100% accurate. I just said I saw how he could make the connection if there were remarks about "lynching socialists".

We all have preconceived notions about certain words and phrases. And the word "lynching" has some pretty serious connotations to blacks.

I am not jumping on the "any attack against the president is racism" bandwagon any more than I jumped on the "any attack against Bush is unpatriotic" bandwagon back in the day.

But I am saying that understanding the effect of certain words and phrases is an important part of having a serious dialogue. (as opposed to a shouting match)

I think using the word "lynching" in a conversation about a black man is a bit foolish. However it isn't "socialism" that is carrying the load in the conversation.

good grief, you explaining all this is as bad as the guy on the video...

now, IF the word Socialist was used with the word "lynching"...blaa blaa blaa..

I agree that socialism isn't a code for the "N" word any more than neocon is a code word for jew.

But I think that being aware of the effect of key words on the other party is an important part of a working dialogue.

Otherwise we end up with the delightful process we have at the townhall meetings we see now.

Not to get off subject but wasn't the term neocon originally used to describe former Jewish liberals who turned conservative? It wasn't until the Iraq War really that it was kind of used as a negative term against folks.

Didn't some people try and call Bill Clinton a socialist during his Presidency? My recollection is people on the right have attempted to labeled those on the left socialists far before Obama hit the national political scene.

It's kind of like the gang mentality. Each side always wants revenge for the last killing and thus it never stops.

What a total out of his gord asshole! You get the attempt here don't ya? "if you don't want to be a kooky "birther" then you need to stand against them.

Love the way he whines about being called a socialist then moves into calling critics of Obama's policies "birther's". I am with AZH, I think "birther is the code word for jew.

You mean like birther and teabagger?
