This level of carnage, destruction, and devastation is incomprehensible. I cannot even conceive the amount of human suffering in Mosul. I have a good amateur knowledge of military history, and apparently there has been nothing like this since the Battle of Stalingrad. Corpses, misery, and death on the smoldering ruins of a once great city laid waste. I don’t know how humans, especially the children trapped in Mosul, ever become whole again.
Given the unrelenting battlefield experience they have weathered, Iraqi special forces and federal police must be one most experienced and formidable urban warfare militaries in the world. And yes folks, it was Muslims – Sunni, Shia, Kurd, men, women – who fought a gang of criminal terrorists to the death and prevailed. But, at what cost??
