Not one country that has a government run medical plan has reverted to a "pay or suffer" system. Not one. Every country started out with a "pay or suffer" system. Dozens changed to a government system. Capitalist countries. Communist countries. Socialist countries. Rich countries. Poor countries. Large countries. Small countries. Countries in the west and countries in the east. Countries in the north and countries in the south. Not one has reverted to a "pay or suffer" system.
Some malcontents or greedy folks will scour the internet seeking the rare medical case that was bungled in a country of 20 million or 30 million or 60 million and say, "'See! There's the proof it doesn't work." while neglecting to mention the one million or 10 or 20 million who could not afford medical insurance who are now covered.
Then there's the $$$ argument. There isn't even a political movement in any country with a universal plan espousing the return to a "pay or suffer" system. Again, the fear mongers tell us of impending bankruptcy while countries continue, decade after decade, to provide medical coverage.
The bottom line is if we can't or should I say "refuse to" look after our ill then we are already bankrupt.
