More Troops to Afghan

OUTSTANDING!
"we are not there to nationbuild we are there to kill terrorists"

we're going after the Haqqani network, and making sure Paki doesn't allow cross border terrorism.
also we're looking more to India!! ( we have much more in common w/India then Paki)

outstanding..The best (realistic) speech i've EVER heard on AfPak!

Trump actually studied this?? amazing..he hit the exact right concerns.
"Our committment is not unlimited -no blank checks" .. and he won't give a political timetable...awesome!

4k is about right. that puts us able to extend power embedded with ANAF, and still MEDIVAC and air support.
Kabul is still a worry.but we're going to hit back hard in Helmand!

It feels like Groundhog Day': US Marines return to Helmand province
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...arines-return-to-helmand-province-afghanistan
As advisers, the Marines will follow the Afghans into the battlefield. The day before they assumed control of the US mission in Helmand, the Taliban announced its annual fighting season. Helmand is poised to be the main battleground.

:cheer: :yay:

Really good speech.

Laid out a comprehensive plan, including Pakistan and India. No time lines. No nation building. Conditions based withdrawal. And I like the idea of a coalition government including the Taliban.

Gives them a reason to quit the fight in favor of a political solution in Afghanistan.

You sound exactly, and I mean exactly like the NeoCons ten years ago when they lectured me about why we needed to stay in Iraq and keeping fighting there.

My opinion is that 1) Afghans are never going to take the fight to the enemy themselves if they know they can count on the American Air Force, Army, and Special Forces to ride to the rescue, and 2) One thing the Soviets learned, and is still true today, is that no matter how much you try to stand up an Afghan National Army, if they are seen as puppets, a proxy of the great global world powers they will never have the legitimacy they really need.

nope nope nope..Bush committed us to building a new Iraq -complete with our Green Zone type of forced government.
Trump specifically said no more of that. Afghanistan has to build it's own self

Your"opinion" regarding the ANAF is worthless. zip. nada. you have NO CLUE because you DO NOT RESEARCH
you'd rather pontificate your sanctimonious drivel..

The ANAF have taken YUGE casualties. They are not reliant on US forces fighting for them!
( we don't have 100k there now like Bush/Obama surge -we have less the 8k)
they are reliant on US air ( choppers/strikes) and embedded high skills- not US ground troops.

Weary Afghan Army Fights on as U.S. Weighs Troop Increase
https://www.usnews.com/news/world/a...an-army-fights-on-as-us-weighs-troop-increase

Despite assurances from foreign and Afghan officials about progress in improving leadership and tackling corruption, security forces have struggled to contain the insurgency and now control no more than 60 percent of the country.

Most of the issues the troops talk about - lack of reinforcements and equipment, endless tours of duty - are well known despite promises of improvement.

At the same time, security forces have suffered what the U.S. Congressional watchdog SIGAR described as "shockingly high" casualties. Official figures are patchy but at least 807 soldiers and police were killed in the first six weeks of the year after 6,785 in the first 10 months of 2016. Privately, many officials say the real numbers are even higher.

The heavy casualties have also contributed to the other persistent problem facing the army, maintaining the strength of the units doing the fighting. A third of the security forces' personnel does not re-enlist every year and the actual number of troops available for duty is far below official totals, leaving front-line troops increasingly stretched.

You are full of shit.

War is war.

Escalation is escalation.

Spin is spin.

Thousands more Americans will be killed and maimed.

You pilloried Hillary for being a war monger simply because she cast a vote to authorize use of force in Iraq. You fawned over Trump because he promised to get us out of Afstan. Now he's going back on his word and doing the opposite of what he said during the campaign and you're still lapping up his shit.
idiot. not war is war. war is either effectively prosecuted or not.

Hillray voted for NATIONBUILDING and organized REGIME CHANGE in Iraq/Libya.

I would be OK with getting all the way out, but that would leave a vacuum ( as Trump said).
we really do not want to leave a terrorist state behind

This is the best way - small amount of troops in a support role to KILL TERRORISTS-
and trying much harder to get the regional players to step up

Uuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...yeah we would have...that was one of our big complaints...Obama telegraphing when we would be there and when we would be leaving.:palm:

I think there's a rule that anyone on this board who thought Invading and Occupying Iraq was a great idea can just shut their mouths on any thread where military strategy is the topic. They have no - none, zero, nada, zilch - credibility.

So take a back seat, and keep quiet, ma'am.

I didn't watch the speech. Teleprompter Trump makes my ears burn. Did he explain how you get rid of terrorists without nation-building?

he did exactly that. Use a counter-terrorism strategy-not a counterinsurgency (nationbuilding) .

Put some pressure on Paki to close the border from Waziristan ( Tribal areas). which of course is very difficult.
Pakistan has been letting internal pressures from the TTP Taliban blow off over the border into AfPak, instead of drifting south to Peshawar/Quetta.
Try to get India to buy into a regional security cooperative
