More Christian "love"...

Did Jesus use government to act, or did he preach about your personal actions? Did Jesus tell us to use the government to force others to follow him either by marriage or by forced donation? Did Jesus say, "Get government to feed the poor so you don't have to?"

My guess is you are picking up bits that are somewhat out of context.

Government is not the means to act in the name of Jesus. It is your personal responsibility to act as you believe your Deity acted, it is not your responsibility to force me into some religiously based action because you want to relieve yourself of responsibility.

Basically, Jesus absolutely would have preached that government was the means to get things done had it been the way he thought it should be done, with the Senate in Roman times he may even have been able to get things done. He didn't. Not because he didn't know about government or wasn't able, but because you are the one he was saying should act that way as a believer, not defray responsibility onto others through government.

if more people followed the original teachings of jesus we would not need government to do the things that he exhorted us to do, but do not

We still don't need the government to do that... at least not in the name of Jesus we don't.

Reality: The republican platform supports means tested programs to help the poor.

There isn't any party that doesn't support that. However, nobody should invoke the name of Jesus to pretend that he would support any political party. It's just silly. If that was what he wanted, it would be what he preached.

he said render unto caesar that which is caesars and unto god that which is gods

perhaps the problem is that we no longer have small communities where people took care of each other, so people began voting to have government take up the slack

The problem is both sides seem to think that expressing their religion into government is "good". It isn't. It isn't good when you try to define marriages, nor when you try to make people believe that Jesus would have wanted it that way. Had he wanted it that way, he would have said it. Instead he told his believers to do it, not force others to through government.

Jesus wouldn't tell you that Government is the Way, the Truth, and the Light...

I disagree.
I say the reason people no longer take care of each other, is because the Government stepped in and said they could do it better and some people believed them.

perhaps, but who will take care of the hungry and poor

however, you are correct, there too much religion in government despite the first amendment

That is well stated.

To me it seems that after Vietnam, that the Government tried to supply minimal help; but like everything else, those being helped wanted more and the Government has used it to their advantage ever since.
Now they use it to stay elected.

i disagree

perhaps it a chicken or the egg problem

which came first, people not taking care of each other and the government stepping in or people wanting to pass the buck to the government

Don't back pedal now.
You and I have been around long enough to remember when it was the Churchs and neighbors that took care of those in need.
Then once the Government started with the commodities, the outside help began to wane; except in the rural areas.

that and friends and family

but those bond have been shattered by the mobility of the population

people move too often

however, we recently moved from a village to a small town and have gotten to know our neighbors already and they are nice people

still pedophiles have made people less and less trusting of each other, especially with our children

where is the solution though, we cannot change human nature or people

So when you were growing up, no one helped anyone who wasn't "friend or family".
I guess it sucked when you were little.

yeah, but for that reason, my grandparents live just 4 blocks away and we knew most of the people in the neighborhood

my adoptive father was a pedophile

Which didn't answer the question about anyone helping those who weren't "friend or family".
Your adoptive father has no bearing on people helping each other.

you said that my childhood must have sucked

we did not need anyone who was not a friend or family member

there were church members and neighbors, but they were either friends or we did not know them
