Mississippi's still fattest but Alabama closing in

I agree with you about moderation and I'd be willing to bet a whole hog I'm in better shape then SM. Just rode 30 mile on my bike monday in under 2 hours.
Not bad, but The Southern Man has never been much of a distance guy- too damn boring. I've been doing timed miles instead.

Time was that was a warm up for me. I used to be a USCF Cat 3. Got busted with a buddy coming down Clingmans Dome at over 60 mph. Park Ranger was gonna give us a ticket for speeding. My buddy and I were thrilled. Prick didn't give it to us just to be spitefull.

Welcome to 'Carry On Cycling'

Good to be good at something; mine's skiing. My fastest on skis (that has been clocked) is 55 mph.

You're right. I don't have a clue! LOL Whatchyoutalkingabout Willis?

There were a series of British films in the 50's-70's in which your coming down "Clingman's Dome" would have not been out of place in the script. :D

That's not bad. A little better than average. Indicates your in decent shape but not great. Not what I would consider "fit" though. You need to get that down closer to 50 if your gonna do timed miles, otherwise you risk injury.
My RHR has always been that high, even when I ran tack in HS. A better indicator of fitness is your max HR. I've built up to the time miles slowly over the last two years under supervision from my physician.

Zooming down the side of ice mountains at 55 mph is my idea of a nightmare.

Martial arts are safer.

In fact, disarming unexploded bombs might be safer.
It only unsafe if there are other folks on the slope or you're unskilled or unfamiliar with the course. When I did this, last year, It was my son and I's 2nd day at the resort and we did the run first thing in the morning after riding "first chair". It was only intermediate terrain and we'll go faster next time we get the chance, probably at Squaw Valley next spring. :)

I'm sorry but max heart rate is pretty much genetically set and declines with age. It's not really a good indicator of fitness at all, not nearly as good as your RHR is. Now you can use your max heart rate for setting training conditions and that's quite affective, though again, you don't want to do to much of it or with out enough base volume as you risk injury. What is your mile time may I ask?

BTW, RHR is a better indicator of fitness because a low RHR indicates exercise induced cardiopulminary hypertrophy, meaning an increase in both heart stroke volume and an increase in the precentage of the lungs vital capacity you use during exercise.

I seriously doubt that! LOL No sport is safe unless your properly trained, conditioned and physically fit for that particular sport.

At one time my RHR was 42 and I could do a 40K time trial in under an hour on my bike and I could easily descend at speeds of 50 to 60 mph but If I had walked into a martial arts ring I would have gotten my head knocked off.
