ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI – A Michigan man has been charged with multiple crimes after he allegedly threatened volunteers working at a campaign tent.
The alleged incident involving 55-year-old Jason Lynch Lafond of St. Clair Shores occurred at a tent in the parking lot of a VFW on Jefferson Avenue in St. Clair Shores on Oct. 12.
Lafond had approached the tent looking for campaign materials in support of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, but was told the available materials on that day were in support of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Lafond allegedly shouted derogatory slurs, including ones targeting sexual orientation before telling the volunteers that when Trump wins, he will “exterminate” people like them.
Lafond returned to his vehicle and allegedly accelerated toward volunteers, who had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck before leaving the scene.
“He gunned his vehicle so fast that I legitimately thought I was about to die. I thought this man was going to kill me,” said Melissa Crook, a volunteer for the St. Clair Shores Democratic Club, told WWJ-TV in Detroit.
“I still don’t know how he was able to stop his car that fast because it’s not an electric vehicle, but he did, and I’m thankful that he did, but I thought that was it and I would never see my loved ones again.”
Lafond has been charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony and three counts ethnic intimidation, a two-year felony.
