It's a fact that it was common for army, navy and air units to have ' Political Officers ' assigned to them to try to ensure that they kept to the line of the Reichstag . Of course, none of the allies asked them about their political aspirations in the heat of battle- as you imply- but they were not all Nazis , just as all Jews are not Neo-Zionists. There are plenty of books and films which emphasize the non-Nazi aspects of many Germans- just as there are many books, films and current movements which emphasize the non-Zionist aspects of many Jews.
