I think McConnell calculated his decision to lay it at the feet of the next senate, run by Democrats. That way, Republicans can blame it on 'Partisanship', rather than Insurrection to cancel a free and fair Election.

McConnell is weighing his options, if he goes against Trump, he could help in getting the seventeen votes needed, or even if he doesn’t offer an opinion for the next week, he can keep Trump in limbo, either way, he may scare Trump enough that Trump resigns before January 21st rather than take the chance of being the first President in history to be convicted. Mitch’s concern is Trump, rather to get Trump’s influence out of the GOP

However, if it appears Trump will keep his base and continue as a player in the GOP, Mitch will switch quickly
