They can afford it, overall, but it’s going to hurt the major investors. They want Murdoch himself to pay for it. That’s the fight I’m curious about seeing the outcome. Still, Fox will have to clean up its act. I watch Brett Baier as a weather vane. IMO, he’s clearly a little less RW and a little more centered. The Five preceding him and Jesse Waters after are too lightweight to use as a measurement.
 
Social Security is paid out of money collected from workers' paychecks. It is not a government expense. SS is run on 2 percent of revenue. It has never missed a check. if it fails to meet its promises, it has to cut check amounts. When it was started it was made clear the government would not make up shortfalls. Checks would get smaller.

It would have been better to do it when Trump was in office. He jacked the debt up 8 trillion in 4 years. That is the worst 4 years in debt history. The Repoubs are always the accelerators of the debt. They never do a thing about it until the Dems are in office, then they are suddenly fiscal conservatives. They have no standing to link cuts to Biden's policies and hook it to the debt ceiling. The debt ceiling was passed every time Trump needed it. No big crisis. The ceiling pays our debt. McCarthy took a victory lap over the development on Wednesday. "Now the president and Leader Schumer have finally backed off their idea that they won't negotiate. They finally backed off the insane un-rational, un-sensible idea that you just raise the debt ceiling," he said......

I doubt the US will default. But if it does it will very clearly be Biden and his handlers fault. The Republicans have offered a modest cut in spending and a debt ceiling increase. The ball is in dementia Joe's court.
