Global hunger for soybeans 'destroying Brazil's Cerrado savanna'
The Cerrado savanna is an area in Brazil the same size as Western Europe.
It's one of the most biodiverse places in world - 40% of animal and plant species there can be found nowhere else on the planet.
A report by the World Wildlife Fund says is being burned and cleared at speed, with the deforestation largely driven by demand for land to grow soybeans. These are mainly exported to feed livestock, such as pigs and chickens, for consumption around the world.

We should relocate democrats to the most challenged parts of the planet so they can save the day. My vote is for the Amazon.
Yeah- but then you're the guy who thinks that eating imported food makes us as guilty as the polluting shipowners.
You won't have to import your bananas if you live some place you can grow them in your backyard.
You're no doubt unaware that ripe bananas can be a cancer-retardant. Maybe you'll remember that next time you attempt your racist innuendo.

Humanity has wiped out 60% of animal populations since 1970, report finds
The huge loss is a tragedy in itself but also threatens the survival of civilisation, say the world’s leading scientists
Humanity has wiped out 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles since 1970, leading the world’s foremost experts to warn that the annihilation of wildlife is now an emergency that threatens civilisation.
The new estimate of the massacre of wildlife is made in a major report produced by WWF and involving 59 scientists from across the globe. It finds that the vast and growing consumption of food and resources by the global population is destroying the web of life, billions of years in the making, upon which human society ultimately depends for clean air, water and everything else.
“We are sleepwalking towards the edge of a cliff” said Mike Barrett, executive director of science and conservation at WWF. “If there was a 60% decline in the human population, that would be equivalent to emptying North America, South America, Africa, Europe, China and Oceania. That is the scale of what we have done.”

Then why are we the world's largest importer?Bananas grow readily in the USA.
Hello Kacper,
A hateful view.
Shame on you, suggesting fellow Americans who have just as much right to be in this country should leave because you don't like their views.
I would suggest you find some more love in your heart for your fellow countrymen.
Without liberals, America would be half of what it is.
Then why are we the world's largest importer?
There is nothing hateful about expecting people to put their money where their mouth is. I grow about 60 percent of my household's annual vegetable consumption. I grow year round. I am building a greenhouse out of reclaimed materials so I can diversify my cold weather selections. All of this lessens my pollution footprint. Among all this growing, I foster habitat, food and water sources for wildlife. I have purchased land to sit fallow. I have an old farm I could timber and make a nice chunk of money off of that I refuse to timber because of its devastating effects on wildlife. A good 90% of the paper/cardboard that comes into my house gets composted. Glass and metal gets recycled as well as about half the plastics as our city only takes 1&2's and we get a fair amount of 5's that get trashed. Whenever possible, I buy local grown meats, eggs, and dairy. Sitting in the internet saying something needs to be done does nothing toward getting things done. Sitting on the internet proclaiming that the people who ship goods should be punished for the pollution caused by getting those goods to the same people who are issuing their feckless proclamations isn't liberalism, isn't progressivism, and isn't even civil.
We consume more than we produce.
Also, we consume them year-round, but produce them only seasonally.
Eating seasonally is ecologically appropriate. Eating locally is ecologically appropriate. Having something imported from the other side of the planet 365 days a year in case you get a hankering for them is not. Big Agribusiness is horrible for the planet as well as developing nations' economic prospects.
Hello Kacper,
You are so correct. It is also healthier to eat a larger variety by shifting with what is seasonal. Although, I do like as much variety as I personally can get. And not everyone resides in a climate where bananas can be home-grown.
