I agree whole heartedly but I seriously doubt, even though she's in the pocket of the oil companies, that Landreau is taking pleasure over the economic devestation this has caused the the Gulf Coast fishing and tourism industries.

And what about the Tourism Industry? Look you can't rob Peter to pay Paul. What were really talking about here is BP big snafu here has violated the property rights of a hell of a lot of people and my point here is that people with property rights in the oil industry aren't special. They don't have superior property rights. They don't have the right to destroy other peoples property with out compensating them for the harm they have done. If this hurts those who work in the oil industry well then they will learn a real hard lesson and will be a hell of a lot more careful the next time they drill a deep oil well, won't they?

You can't fuck up like this and not expect to pay a price.

BP has already stated that they will pay the complete costs for the cleanup, so you really can't have it all ways. If you wish to cut back on foreign oil imports then I can't see that you have any choice in the short to medium term. There just isn't any cheap onshore oil sources left in the US. I read something the other day that said that if Americans all drove the same vehicles as in Europe, then you could save at least two million barrels of oil imports per day.

Sorry Tom but I work for a major corporation that used to be an oil company and I'm not that naive. What BP says they will do and what they actually do, will probably be two different critters.

So explain this to me, if BP's share price is driven down so far that it ceases to be a viable entity who will pay for the cleanup then? Maybe a Chinese oil company will buy up the assets at a knockdown price and then tell the US to sue them in a Chinese court if they want compensation! Obama has a lot of support over here but if he carries on the way he's been acting recently that might dry up. This and Hilary Clinton's comments on the Falklands are really opening peoples' eyes as to how ruthlessly America treats its so called best friends.
