MEXICO CITY (AP) — When Mexico imposed a visa requirement on Venezuelans in January, it briefly had the desired effect: The number of Venezuelans detained at the U.S.-Mexico border plunged. But it’s now clear that it only pushed the migrants onto more dangerous clandestine routes.

Suddenly unable to simply fly to Mexico as tourists, but still desperate to leave their country, Venezuelan migrants joined others traveling over land through the dense, lawless jungle on the Colombia-Panama border.

If you illegally enter, the process pre-Biden was generally for you to be held in a facility until you were arraigned and tried for illegal entry. At that point, if found guilty, you were deported. Illegal re-entry is a felony and you would go to prison for a year or more.
Biden reinstituted "catch and release." That is, those caught illegally entering are given a notice to appear (essentially a citation or ticket) and then are supposed to show up at a specified time for their trial. They are allowed to stay in the US in the meantime. Something like 40% bother to. The rest don't give a shit and just stay in the US with an extra charge tacked on.

If you cross into the US at other than a US customs station at a port of entry, you are illegally entering the US. Doesn't matter if you turn yourself into Border Patrol or other authorities. You are in the US illegally. You can request asylum, and in the past, your having illegally entered would be held against you at your asylum hearing. Biden isn't doing that either.

The proper procedure for requesting asylum is to go either to the US embassy in your home country or to present yourself at a port of entry to US customs and make that request.

You present yourself at A PORT OF ENTRY. Key words, pay attention. A port of entry is controlled by federal authority. Present yourself, get vetted, go back and get in line. That's the law.

The “ghost” flights in the middle of the night to Lehigh Valley last month are far from the only transit flights that ICE has sent to PA this year.

According to the U.S Department of Homeland Security, ICE conducted over 900 domestic flights of illegal immigrants around the U.S in 2021. One of the destination cities was identified as Harrisburg, PA. ICE also conducted at least 11 “transfer” flights into Philadelphia. It’s unknown how many passengers were on each flight and the final destination for each passenger.

Learn to read. I didn't say a "legal border crossing." I said to border officials. The "metering" policy limits how many immigrants can cross the border to request asylum each day. That leaves the remaining thousands to stay at the Mexican border subject to crime and injury, so many choose to walk across the border and turn themselves into border officials. These people can also request asylum. With an 80,000 backload of cases they cannot all be detained in border facilities.

Try checking immigration and border patrol information rather than right-wing talk shows for your information. I don't think I am smart. I just think I can read creditable sources rather than looking for stuff to whine about.

The Immigration and Nationality Act specifically allows immigrants to apply for asylum even if they do not appear at a port of entryi. Trump tried to change that policy but was unsuccessful.
