Derek Mead died in June last year after being crushed by a forklift truck on his farm in Somerset in the west of England.

A farmer was crushed to death last year when his Jack Russell dog pushed a lever inside a forklift truck, causing it to drive into him, an inquest has heard.

Dairy farmer Derek Mead, 70, was building a rock garden at his home in Hewish, near Weston-super-Mare in the west of England, when the accident happened in June last year, the UK's Press Association news agency reported.
An inquest into Mead's death heard that he left the vehicle in neutral and didn't put the handbrake on when he got out to open a gate on his land.
Mead's dog remained inside the vehicle and is thought to have jumped onto the shuttle lever, sending the truck forward and into the farmer.

Since I have managed to run over myself twice without the assistance of even a dog, I will refrain from judgment here. #BanHydrostaticTransmissions

But they're so damn convenient, lol. I can't see what pruno wrote, but I suspect the dog wasn't actually "driving the forklift". I also suspect the victim of this tragic mishap was a white person. Nuff said.

I bet it was a white dog (or guno would not bother posting about it).

Dogs are always getting into forklift accidents.

I don't know why people keep on letting them drive them.

dog left in cab; man gets out to open gate; dog believed to have hit whatever that caused forklift to move forward and crush man.

Mine were a work cart's HST was messing up and I was bent over in front of it picking up something while motor was running and the sumbitch ran over me and then I still had to chase the freaking thing down as it was puttering on away; the other was also same work with a small 3 wheeler I got hung up when I grounded it on a drop off so I was trying to push the thing off while engaging the peddle with a long stick. When I got it free, I accidentally hit the peddle with a stick and it took off and caught my leg with a back tire and pulled me under it. I had tire tread mark bruises all over my leg so if it had killed me at least even the most idiotic CSI could have figured out how it happened.

Bought a Simplicity Prestige w/hydrostatic this spring to replace an old 1972 Bolens (w/snowthrower) and a 1997 MTD (to mow grass), both worked well but a pain in the ass to constantly shift. Should have bought the Hydrostatic 30 yrs. ago!!

But to address the OP, the dog probably wasn't "driving" :palm:

I like HST's when they work right. When things go wrong, they can go very wrong though.

I did a lot of research, visited a number of dealers and looked at many different brands of tractors before I spent the money on the Simplicity. Yes, there's a lot of features and that adds to what can go wrong, but keeping it clean and well maintained is the key to longevity. That Bolens I had was a tank and worked as well as I could ever hope, but the parts I couldn't make myself are scarce and very expensive. Parts for the MTD were also becoming scarce, so I opted for one good tractor to replace them.

The place I was working had a lot of old commercial Toro products with them. My dad had an MTD with it back when they were Murray and the mowers actually lasted more than 3 years before they started having issues the way troy-bilts do now.
