Oh please. Even the audience didn't laugh. This false outrage is outrageous.
Was that directed at me?
I'm not outraged. I simply think he owes the members of the American military an apology.

That's not what the joke is about. The joke is about the US military being based endlessly in parts of the world it doesn't need to be.
It makes fun of something senseless or hypocritical. Do you think he and his writers came up with this joke thinking "Hm, I wonder what kind of joke we can tell that would denigrate the troops?"
People on the right who complain all too often about how political correctness is destroying America show their own hypocrisy when they can't take a joke or let people just say what's on their mind.

meadowmuffins....the joke was absolutely about rape, there are no doubt numerous other crimes that he could have joked about, but no, he specifically mentioned rape....
i don't about PC stuff...but making fun of rape is beyond the pale and to make fun our soldiers for raping people is beyond the pale. apparently you have no understanding of class and decency.
Adam is the most decent, classy guy on this site. You, on the other hand, need to go back to Yardank County or wherever you came from with your mate in tow.

I agree... on all counts.

Congrats, I actually had to use Urban Dictionary for that one.
I dunno, I don't think the joke is about rape. It's funny, risque, and it "goes there" because it mentions rape as the purpose of the troops being there. Consider the reality, which is that these episodes are one of the most notable things to be reported from U.S. bases in those countries. We haven't exactly fought a war in Japan or Germany in a while...and that's the point of the joke.
We could also now tell jokes about Bill Clinton's involvement in the banking system collapse, but I think most people are still satisfied with jokes about his sexual misadventures.
Remember the first half of Maher's joke where he said "Forget bringing the troops home from Iraq, let's bring them home from World War II. Why do we have..." That's the context of everything else he said.
By the way, I don't think rape is funny. I think a well told joke involving rape can be funny. I think a clown raping someone on a TV show skit is funny.
I also don't think war, STDs, famine, or dictatorships like Soviet Russia are funny, but there are excellent jokes about all these things.
And you're absolutely entitled to be mad. It's your right and it's our right to disagree. But one, I think it's a misinterpretation that people in the right-wing (which is not a pejorative term for me) web media want you to continue to misinterpret, and two, I think it's silly that anyone thinks this outrage would be used for any practical political purpose.
Bill Maher has no political power. And he certainly isn't a shill for the Democrats, based on what he's saying. He is influencing our society without question, but this is something conservatives should understand how to take advantage of rather than shun. Clearly, Bill Maher is not against having conservatives and libertarians on his show as well. He does all the time and lets them express their views.
I do believe this one denigrated American troops. He basically stated that they were all there raping and pillaging which is not true.
Why is it wrong for me to state that I believe he owes members of the American military an apology?
By the way, lest we forget, our soldiers have not chosen to go to Japan or Germany. They have been sent there by their superiors. The way Mr. Maher said it, was that the soldiers chose to be there so that they could rape women.
It's not. I apologize if I made it seem like you shouldn't be able to choose how you feel about it.
But I don't think the joke does say that. The whole point of the joke is to make ridicule of a pointless thing. The only way to show how pointless this might be is to knowingly attribute an incorrect purpose and then see how people react.
I think if anything the real sad result would be for outrage over the joke to overshadow the important point he was making about the United States being spread across the world.
