Maine Governor wants to stop EBT being used for candy/soft drinks

Those needs can be met without the government being involved at all. Do you believe there are people receiving food stamps where the sole reason that need exists is due to the choices that person made in life?

There is clearly some abuse of the Food Stamp program, and I am all for trying to end that abuse but not at the cost of people and children going without food.

I know plenty of people who never earned a dime who eat very well on their great grandparents dime.

I think you ought to forfeit some of those freedoms if you aren't paying taxes and are using taxpayer money.

Giving welfare recipients unlimited freedoms is why we are 20T in debt. They have 7
don't forget corporate welfare.
I can think of a gazillion more worthless items in the federal budget then food stamps.
Yes, there are abuses ( 7 kids -no money) it's one of the things we tolerate in a society to serve the greater good (needs)

No, that's not the case. Entitlements and military spending are the major portion of the federal budget. S.S. and Medicare are currently unsustainable in their current form.

If they're buying sure
But when they're parasites they don't have a right on how tax dollars get spent.
Can't buy that here, not sure why it's different.

we deliver the benefits to them via EBT card ( and many are working poor, not just "parasites") -it's then their benefits to use..
Of course we can restrict that..but why? are you concerned they are eating poorly, or squandering their benefits on 'empty calories'?

I don't really care as long as it's FOOD and not lottery tix or booze and cigs. There are bigger wasteful fish to fry.. as it were

Here's the error in your calculations. Its not just "food stamp money." Think of what happens to all these unwanted children, mostly growing up in ghettos and other poor areas. They often become criminals and join street gangs. Now we are paying for their incarceration, the public defense, the judicial system (judges, prosecutors, bailiffs, clerks, etc.), probation/parole officers, correction officers, extra police, extra police task forces, fbi, rehab for drug depended people, etc etc.

Add it all up and this is a multi billion dollar industry the gubment has created with "just food stamps."

If people stopped having kids before they are married or financially stable, 90% of these problems would disappear.

Welfare, medicaid, and SSI, are all part of the Entitlements. Yes we spend a lot on defense too. But in this world I feel its necessary.

Welfare is a blip on the screen compared to the cost of S.S. and Medicaid. If the national debt is a serious issue to you those two issues need to be addressed.

Now what about forcing school kids who get free lunches to eat healthy foods? Good idea of nanny state bill?

The government is supplying a service at a reduced cost for students, if the families do not like healthy foods, they can supply their own lunches.

You need to enact the Grind Solution, kill the Boomers!

SS is sustainable if the government would quit raiding the fund.

How is that any different than saying someone on EBT is getting a free service from the government and if they don't want to eat healthy foods can go buy candy on their own?

that's a pretty big leap to make. There are a lot of factors. Ys here are abuses like where you mentioned "7 kids" ( without means of support other wise).
And I'm certainly no bleeding heart liberal, but it seems to me health care and food are basic human needs( therefore rights)
So you gotta take the good with the bad.

Not turning this into an S.S. argument but it is not sustainable at today's level benefits.

I would rather cut the military budget and aid to foreign countries than hurt the old, the young and the handicapped.

and you think any demand is reasonable? no, if i'm on EBT you shouldn't be able to tell me that I can't buy a Tbone or ribeye, that I have to buy a 7 bone roast and deal with it. as long as i'm buying actual foodstuffs and not candy or alcohol, it shouldn't really be an issue.

As long as if you're on it, and that means you've demanded someone else be forced to fund your food, no demand is unreasonable. It's unreasonable to demand someone else be forced to buy your food then get mad when they want to set rules. It's easy. Don't like the rules, don't demand the help.

Well, that is another discussion and one that experts don't agree with you. We have had this argument for over 10 years, you are wanting to privatize and I think it is foolish.

Foreign aid is another blip on the screen of our overall budget. Entitlements are our countries largest expense. If one is serious about the national debt then they need to start there.

How does something being a need make it a right?
