Luxembourg to become first country to make all public transport free

Just imagine the cost of public transit workers!!!! I am not opposed to free public transportation, but government employment here in the US can be expensive, disproportionately so in a lot of places compared to private sector wages which is why people scoff whenever government workers act so put upon.

Yes- but the end result is worth the cash.

What does an unprecedented major hurricane disaster cost ? 100 square miles of wildfires ?

Don't know what a wildfire costs these days, but the cost to my city for the last hurricane was about $15M thus far not including private losses. It will go up as they rebuild some of the roads and re-establish the washed out hillsides and such. Having 80% of the power grid knocked out was quite expensive in just labor.

Well since it's about a square mile, how awesome!

Yeah- and for those short connections that public transport couldn't cover you could have fat capitalist fuckers pulling rickshaws instead of doing jail time. Good for them !

Well- it can only get worse as optimal hurricane conditions become more frequent. Politicians don't have the will to oppose the staggering emissions of private transport- and many are bought already. It's going to get bloody.

It is a lot easier to say we need to have public transportation than it would be to actually deliver public transportation on such a huge scale. I have thought about this for my city. A tremendous amount of prime real estate would have to be taken at a huge cost alone just to make room for a rail system. You cannot just take existing roadways that would still be needed at the very least for Police, Fire and EMS. There would have to be a massive upgrade to the electrical grid just to power a subway system. In addition to all that, the carbon costs for destroying and building would far exceed the saves in PoDunkityDunk with our 45K population

Some people see things that are and ask, Why?

Some people dream of things that never were and ask, Why not?

That doesn't change the answer--it is too expensive and impractical. From what I have read, a life-cycle analysis of rail systems compared to passenger vehicles, also still favors the passenger vehicle in terms of carbon costs. It goes back to what most serious people will tell you--the greenest house you can find is one that already exists because the damage has already been done.

Some locations are more suitable than others, sure. Some could only manage a partial response. How about free buses in yours ?

Social welfare is a safety net, moron. It dissuades the impoverished from hanging smug degenerates- such as yourself- upside down from lamp-posts and emptying your pockets.

It's not a safety net when it becomes a multi-generational lifestyle.

Nothing smug about expecting people to take care of themselves instead of constantly begging for someone else to be forced to do it. What it prevents is those you call smug degenerates from exercising their 2nd amendment rights and the Stand Your Ground laws of their States when some idiot believes it's OK to steal because others won't enable their freeloading mentality.

I am indifferent to free buses. I doubt what they do collect come close to the operating cost. For some token amount like $3 each way, you can schedule a short bus to pick you up at the door and take you wherever. It is a good service for the elderly and handicapped as they have the lift, but surely it doesn't cover the cost. I still wouldn't take our city buses for free. They are incredibly uncomfortable to sit in and the drivers drive like crap flooring them from a stop and then slamming down brakes to stop them. They will put a hurting on you. I tried using them and was like to hell with this.
