Trump again made his pitch to coal miners — as president, he said, he would rescue their struggling industry.

this would mean rescuing it not only from current and future environmental regulation, but also from market forces that are favoring the burning of natural gas for electricity — meaning that Trump’s promise to save coal runs counter to technological and industry trends.

But there was something curious about what Trump said.

"You look at what’s happening with China, the amount of energy they’re producing and what they’re using coal for, tremendous amounts of, just tremendous. It’s like incredible. And they’re not cleaning it. Believe me, they’re not cleaning it. We have a small, a very, very small planet compared to the universe, right? And that stuff is going up and they’re not cleaning it. And here we produce great stuff, and we’re not allowed to use it."

If this were 1816 trump would be lying to livery stable workers that he would make industry stop building automobiles to protect and bring back their jobs tending to horses.
That is, if he thought he needed their votes.
