NEW YORK (Reuters) - Authorities on Monday arrested the chief executive of a private New York financing firm on suspicion of running a purported Ponzi scheme that attracted $400 million in investments, U.S. law enforcement officials said.

Nicholas Cosmo, head of Agape World Inc on New York's Long Island, was said to provide commercial bridge loans, but was instead operating a traditional Ponzi scheme in which early investors are paid with the money of new clients, officials said.

Because of the Greek word Agape. Many people associate that to Christianity because it is one of the three types of "love" and often taught about in churches.

BTW - There is nothing specifically Christian about the word "Agape"..

so you have to be a bible thumper to know that?

(alright, most likely i didn't pay attention in church)

Two common words used for "love" in the old Greek texts: Eros and Agape. I knew immediately that Desh associated this guy's business with religion when I read the title of her thread and saw the name of the business in the article, though when I read the article I saw no connection with religion.

(Yes, I made an error and had to correct it)

Some ancient Bible scholars associated the word to "Divine or unconditional" love.

However Plato often mentioned it as the love of a family.

Again, it is not a specifically Christian word. There is no more claim to that word by Christians than the English word "Love".

I'm sure this con man had no idea the word would conjour up religious thoughts in its investors.

Its probably just a coincidence.
For most of the people here, including the religious ones, it simply didn't.

It was ineffective because it isn't a Christian word, it is one of three Greek words translated as "love", amazingly people who are not Christian can use each one of those words too.

Do you have evidence that he sold his funds as "Christian" funds? One ad? Anything at all but your own suspicions?

Also, it may have been the English word "Agape" (pronounced with the long "a" vowel sound.) that he named the company.

No in My world people who wear their religion on their sleeve are sometimes not very religious.

Its an example of why one should not flaunt God for business.

Maybe my religious ignorance is showing here but what in that article would make anyone think religion was involved? Investors thought this guy had invested in projects such as the Bay Bridge. What would make you think the Bay Bridge or similar commercial projects had anything to do with religion?
