Longtime GOP Strategist Steve Schmidt Joins The Democratic Party

Hello cawacko,

In 1960 who went to college? Not nearly as many people as today. It was mostly kids from well to do white families. If your goal was to keep it that way then maybe you could have kept tuition close to free. But it wasn't scalable once attendance started growing.

Don't tell all the countries that already do that and have no problem.

Don't tell City College in NYC.

And many more examples abound.

Hello Cypress,

I believe Carter would have beat Reagan if not for the failed rescue mission.

Video footage of burning American helicopters in the Iranian desert put the stench of failure on Carter in a very visceral way.

The weird thing is, Carter turned out to be more steadfast in resisting terrorists than Reagan. Whatever faults he had, Carter never caved to the Iranians. Reagan caved to terrorists and bought the freedom of hostages by illegally giving high tech American weapons to the Iranian mullahs

Iran totally manipulated our 1980 election with that hostage crisis.

And Reagan very unscrupulously used the foreign situation as an election tool. Almost as bad as Nixon did with Vietnam. (killed the '68 peace deal)

Hello Cinnabar,

So the guy who thought Sara Palin was qualified and foisted her upon us, is attempting to hijack the Dem party just as Kasich has and of course the corporate Dems are more right wing than they are left in their acquiescence to the corporate masters. What in his right wing ideology has changed besides him not being a Trumper???

All he did was say he is registering as a Democrat. He's not accepting, nor has he been offered, any positions in the party or any campaigns that I am aware of.

That's not true. "Free" college is a myth. Some countries may not charge you tuition but they charge you fees out the *ss and students still come out of school with debt. "Free" college doesn't include fees, books, room and board etc.

It does if you are taking courses in jail like stoner, ILA, TDAK and the rest of your best friends.

Hello Cinnabar,

Sorry, but I'm not buying their crap because they need a new home. Has his right wing policies and ideologies changed? Where was he when the GOP obstructed and sabotaged Obama's 8 years? Or does it really matter to the establishment wing of the Dem party who sold their soul when they started taking corporate bribes?

Welcome to politics. You battle the other side with the party you have, not the one you wish you had. You wanna go with no party then you have no power. You wanna try to form a third party? Then you split the ticket and hand all the power to the other side.

One possible balanced way out of the two party duopoly might be if the Republican party splits, and then the rabble-rousers of the Democratic party decide to split the Democratic party as well. That would be very interesting, but 2 parties on the left and 2 parties on the right might prove very interesting for American politics.

And we also seriously need Ranked Choice Voting. Although, if that had happened, the GA run-off would not be happening, and that State would have elected 1 Dem and 1 Rep Senator already. And then we would already know the balance of the US Senate - it would preserve the Republican majority.

Hello Phantasmal,

He hasn’t changed, he’s still a conservative and has principles. You may not agree with his politics, I don’t a lot of them, but he respects our government.

You seem very young, maybe, one day you will understand how important balance is and why it important. You can not totally do away with corporations, but there can be change so that their dollars don’t control our government.

That change is slow in coming but on the way.

It is called the American Anti-Corruption Act.

"It’s time to end corruption.
The American Anti-Corruption Act makes it illegal to purchase political influence and puts power back in the hands of the people."

Hello Cypress,

Jimmy Carter's legacy looks much better in hindsight. Carter is almost universally admired today for his human right work, his habitat for humanity foundation, and for genuinely living his Christian principles in an authentic way.

That is a kind of universal admiration Donald Trumpf will never have.

I have reconsidered and reflected on Reagan in retrospect and am aware he was ideologically rigid and not prone to compromise.

But he did work with Tip O'Neil to save and shore up social security, he recognized trickle down economics was failing and raised taxes and revenues many times (though always protecting the rich), and he was willing to compromise with Soviet premier Gorbachev in a way which truly outraged rightwing Republicans.

I am going to take his ultra-liberal son's, Ron Reagan Jr., word that down inside Reagan was a decent and warm person.

Whatever I think of Reagan in hindsight, I will never put him on a par of incompetence and moral corruption with Donald Trumpf.

I concur. Reagan really wanted the best for the USA and did what he thought was best for the country.

Schmidt is very knowledgeable about history and politics. He speaks very well and is intelligent. I have always listened carefully to what he says, even though I did not agree with him. Trump has taken over the Repubs and has made them smaller, meaner, and more dangerous to the American experiment. The smarter reds are fleeing. They do not want the conspiratorial rightys to paint them with the same brush.

A good assessment. Thanks.

Hello Cinnabar,

No he didn't. He was a racist along with being responsible for beginning the demise of the middle class.

True, but he really thought he was doing good for the nation. He wasn't trying to screw anybody.

He really believed that what he was doing was going to benefit the most people; He was simply wrong. The whole 'small government,' get government 'out of the way' thing is simply flawed thinking. Capitalism is not the end-all be-all at all. The fact is that when capitalism is not properly regulated, the rich and powerful rig everything to make them more rich and powerful. That continuously shafts the weak and non-powerful, and causes ever more extreme wealth inequality. That mutes total productivity and hurts the nation.
