The Republican Party is becoming toxic:

"Longtime GOP strategist Steve Schmidt announced that he is registering as a Democrat after nearly 30 years with the Republican Party.

Schmidt made the announcement during an episode of the "Battleground" podcast published Monday, as he and co-host David Plouffe were discussing the Republican House members and state attorneys general that backed Texas's ill-fated election lawsuit before the Supreme Court.

"I spent 29 years as a Republican, I've spent two and a half as an independent, and later this afternoon I will register as a member of the Democratic Party," Schmidt told Plouffe. "Because in America today, it's only the Democratic Party-which is the oldest political party in the world-that stands for the ideas and ideals of American liberty."

Schmidt worked on the the presidential campaign of late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in 2008, and on former President George W. Bush's campaign in 2004."

Better late than never.

I switched GOP to Dem around 1991.

I am probably one of the only posters here who cast a vote for both Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama.

I admire people who think for themselves.

When the organization you have previously identified with no longer reflects your beliefs it's time to move on.

The problem with politics today, and particularly with the Republican party is that so many people simply go along.

The future of our country depends on people making informed decisions.

'Going along' is not doing that.

To your first sentence doesn't that usually mean someone who thinks like me?

Let's be honest, do you think anyone would say "I can't really think for myself, I'm just a a follower"? Highly unlikely. Thus, others who believe like we do must be thinking people as well.

Lots of people have switched parties in their lifetimes (or chosen not to be a member of one and registered as an Independent). Not an uncommon occurrence.

As for Steve Schmidt this dude is the definition of a grifter.

No, I disagree. Of course few are going to admit they only hold their political views because they are copying others, but the fact is a lot of just that goes on. Especially among trades people and laborers. Working class people have to put in long hours to do well. If they have a family or some other release that just about burns down the day right there. They don't have time to read the paper, watch the news, or spend time online soaking up political knowledge. What they do have is lots of time with other workers to talk about the world as they work. In that type of crowd a little information, or misinformation, or disinformation, goes a long way. From ear to mouth to ear to mouth to ear to mouth and on and on. That's why a lot of propaganda is rather simplistic. Simple soundbytes are easy to spread. The shorter the better. No way that is a substitute for being informed. And do you really think any of those people are going to admit they only hold their political views because they are copying others? Nobody wants to own that.

You don't know who Steve Schmidt is and his back story? You started a thread on the guy so I assumed you knew who you were talking about. He and his story have been all over the news for months.

Lots of people switch parties, I really don't care. But this guy isn't some regular Joe on the street who became fed up with the Republican Party. His business and financial interests are pretty well known. Hence his reputation as a grifter.

The wiki page doesn't say anything about any trouble with the law, or even any complaints about him or controversies. Why don't you fill us in on what you're talking about?

The most objectionable thing I can see is that he pushed McCain to select Sarah Palin. Is that what this is all about?

I have seen that anybody who leaves the Republican party is thoroughly rebuked by the right. Many are almost pushed out if their views shift too far away from the straight up party line. Republicans don't allow a lot of individualism. It's pretty much either toe the party line or get swiftboated.

Google Steve Schmidt and grifter and you'll find some good reading (and I'm talking about progressive publications). Some liberals liked the Lincoln Project and others did not. Maybe I read too many progressives on Twitter but they could not believe the amount of money liberals were sending to Schmidt and his group. So this isn't some right-wing only thing.

Plenty of people switch parties. Do you think Democrats celebrate those on the left who become Republicans and how open minded they are and that they can think for themselves? Of course not. This thread is about Steve Schmidt, not others. Go read about his business practices, his ties to other countries, his tax issues and other things. Dude is a political grifter. (and political grifters come in all shape, sizes, colors and political ideology - it's not unique to any one group or type of person)

If he believes in what he has professed over the few decades, hard to believe he can that easily change political parties. He is a traditional Republican, a Bush Republican, so it would seem his path would be attempting to bring the party back to it's Reagan roots rather than becoming a Democrat

The Lincoln Project will probably dissolve now with Trump fading, so it should be interesting to see what direction the rest of them take

I tried that search and what was returned were tabloid stories, which I don't place much credence in. The NY Post was the outlet Rudy selected to try to claim that he had Hunter Biden's laptop, and it was left at a shop full of incriminating stuff and simply 'forgotten about.'

I gotta tell ya what this is starting to look like.

He was a Republican who never signed on to Trump loyalty and instead started The Lincoln Project. Republicans who caved to Trump couldn't have that, so they've been attacking him with bogus stories in the tabloids.

What am I missing?

I can see a future for The Lincoln Project. Trump isn't going away. He will still be making wild claims on twitter, making fraudulent claims about election fraud, and possibly making a run for 2024, holding rallies, stringing his followers along for more donations. That will provide plenty of material for The Lincoln Project.
