The few remaining Republicans in the state of California are most likely going to vote themselves into extinstinction later this week by approving a state budget with some nice new tax increases.

If they won't fight for fiscal disipline what purpose do they serve? None I would argue. We might as well be a one party political state. That seems to be what the people want its what we should get. The Republicans are going to make it a reality.

I'm sorry, cutting 40 billion dollars from the budget would be the most irresponsible action I could possibly think of.

Not all republicans are conservative. Why is it that people insist that they are? You know that Zell Miller isn't a liberal even though he is a democrat, how can you not see the possibility that somebody may be a republican and not "conservative"?

Damo, you must admit that the parties are becoming more ideological in nature. As the geographical divide in America is being broken down by technology, the primary difference in the parties is becoming ideologically, whereas they used to be regional (a northeastern Republican would have a lot more in common with a northeastern Democrat than their western or southern members). Parties used to be generic labels for regional fiefdoms. IMHO, the ideological change is a good thing. Parties SHOULD represent ideologies, and they should punish those who don't represent the ideology. If the voters in the district disagree, they should elect someone of a different party or an independent.

Although there are regional liberal Republicans and regional conservative Democrats, they're becoming extremely rare. There were a bunch of moderate Republican senators when Chafee started, almost half the caucus, now there are about three, and within a decade there will may be none. They're remnants of a dying, almost dead system. Polls show that only 1% of Republicans are liberal and 5% of Democrats conservative. And I'm pretty sure Miller was the last conservative Democrat; there are quite a few moderate Democrats in the senate, but the Democratic party is in general a bigger tent than the Republican party (although ideologically narrowing as well).

Which is an awful thing for our economy, being that huge amounts of state spending will be spent during boom times and state spending will be cut hugely during deficits. Economic nonsense. The only reasonable solution is for the federal government to provide a line of credit.

I think CA should simply tax the hell out of residents of San Fran, Silicon Valley, Orange county, Hollywood elitists etc... they are more than willing to redistribute their wealth. The 'celebrity' mansions can be taken over by the state to provide housing for the poor and homeless. Minimum, one person per bedroom in each home.
