Texas reporter says state is lying about likelihood of massive ‘shock wave’ chemical plant explosion

In an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, a Houston reporter who did an in-depth investigation into potential safety hazards at chemical plants in the Houston area said officials have been unclear about the type of explosion that will occur at the Arkema chemical manufacturing plant outside of the city.

The ticking time bomb of a plant is reportedly flooded by six feet of water in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, making some of the more sensitive chemicals it houses into a threat for explosion.

“[The Harris County fire marshall] said that they don’t expect like a shock wave kind of explosion,” Matt Dempsey, a data reporter for the Houston Chronicle, told Maddow. “That’s in contradiction to the expert said who said we’re sitting on a powder keg type of situation here.”

“Experts on one side are saying it’s a huge thing, and I have the government officials and the company saying it might not be that big,” Dempsey continued. “It’s hard to tell for sure.”

Dempsey went on to detail a back-and-forth he’d had with Arkema’s CEO, who refused to make the plant’s inventory public and who hasn’t answered questions about whether the plant has industry standard fail-safes that deplete the stock in case of disasters like Hurricane Harvey.

“It would have been standard operating procedure for a facility like this to have some sort of compound to quelch the organic peroxide, essentially to make sure the explosion risk, the fire risk was not there,” Dempsey said. “It would eliminate that stock so they wouldn’t have it for product going forward.”

Dempsey said he’s unsure if Arkema followed that procedure.

“I don’t know why they didn’t do that, I haven’t gotten a good answer from Arkema about that at this point,” he continued. “Maybe they weren’t following procedure according to the experts. But I find it troubling that they said they planned for a worst case scenario. and the storm just ripped right through that.”

Due to Texas laws preventing people from being forced from their homes, the 1.5 mile radius around the plant considered to be at risk of explosion has not been evacuated, though Dempsey said most people have left their homes in preparation for the impending explosion.

What's this?

Not a single JPP Trumpkin wants to discuss deregulation and it's effects on the people of Texas?

And NOW we know why...

REVEALED: Burning Houston chemical plant successfully lobbied Trump to strike down safety rules

Arkema, the company that owns the chemical plant in Crosby, Texas, that suffered at least two separate explosions on Thursday, successfully lobbied the Trump administration to delay new safety rules for chemical plants that were due to take effect this year.

The International Business Times reports that Obama-era regulations of chemical plants that were supposed to take effect this past March 14 “were halted by the Trump administration after a furious lobbying campaign by plant owner Arkema and its affiliated trade association, the American Chemistry Council, which represents a chemical industry that has poured tens of millions of dollars into federal elections.”

In killing the new rules, the industry had the help of several Texas Republican lawmakers, including Sen. John Cornyn, Rep. Joe Barton, Rep. Pete Olson, Rep. Pete Sessions and Rep. Kevin Brady. Democratic Texas Rep. Gene Green also lobbied to have the new regulations killed.

Arkema directly objected to the new proposed rules in a letter it sent to the EPA this past May, in which it said the rules “will likely add significant new costs and burdens to the corporate audit process.”

According to the International Business Times, Arkema specifically took issue with new “Safer Technology and Alternatives Analysis” (STAA) rules that would have, among other things, encouraged companies to “simplify covered processes in order to make accidental releases less likely or the impacts of such releases less severe.”

My friend's Ford dealership is five miles from the plant. His place was also flooded, Ford is replacing his inventory.

Good to hear from you!

So our beloved President and the owners of Arkema have foresaken the safety of the people of Texas just so they can line their already fat wallets with even more money.

Arkema is not denying that the plant will explode...
No one has any idea how big that explosion could be because Texass does not require chemical plants to divulge their inventories to the public OR safety officials.
At this point they are saying it's only a question of when...
In Texass the state can not force people to evacuate, no matter how imminent and great the danger is...
Many Texans in the area believe the threat is "fake news" and refuse to leave.
A perfect storm of deregulation.

Libertarian savages.

Imagine having a family member like Zippy? I'd move, change my name, and wouldn't give a forwarding address.

xsept that if zappacrite rilly beleeved that plant will xplode and kill everybody he and hiz famly would skeedaddle

they aint so he dont

Or MAYBE...

Maybe I simply don't live within the BLAST RADIUS of the explosion.

Of course, no one can blame a dim bulb like GBA for making such an idiotic mistake.

Another laughably stupid ZappasTard thread fail. No explosion; no threat. But let's find a way to blame a disaster on.......

..............wait for it..................

TRUMP!

You're an idiot on steroids.

Explosions at flood-hit Arkema plant in Texas, threat of further blasts remains

The company said it was notified at approximately 2 a.m., by the Harris County Emergency Operations Center of two blasts and black smoke.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said on its Twitter feed the deputy had been taken to the hospital and nine others drove themselves to the hospital as a precaution.
