The bill drafted by members of the Republican Study Committee, including Fourth District Representative Todd Rokita, repeals President Obama's health care law, and replaces it with a $7,500 income tax deduction -- $20,000 for families -- if you buy your own insurance. It proposes health savings accounts similar to those in Indiana's health insurance plan, and would make state insurance data and Medicare claims data public, to allow patients to comparison-shop on pricing.

Rokita argues the GOP version would force medical prices down through competition, while preserving existing doctor-patient relationships.

Republicans offered many of the provisions during the original health care debate three years ago. The bill incorporates the existing law's high-risk pools to ensure people with preexisting conditions can get coverage.

A favorite talking point on the right is that only 51% of Americans pay federal income tax.

Passing a credit like this will drive that percentage even higher.

But that won't stop Republicans from blaming Democrats for all those freeloaders out there who pay nothing at the end of the year.

Let the hate commence...

I'm of the mind that this might be a good time to clear the decks and find a few commonalities to start with. Go over what needs to be done to bring costs down, while keeping intrusive gov. at bay.

Would you mind taking your rationality and common sense reasoning to another forum please?

And the freeloaders have spoken.

The don't want any of them pesky working folk cutting into their "no federal income tax" status. That's just reserved for the slackers.

They have? Where?

Because the 49% who don't pay federal income tax are 'slackers'?

How well did that particular argument work out for you in the last election?

What percentage of that 40 something percent do you reckon are digging into their own pockets and paying for their own health care like these folks would be?

I don't know the number myself, but I'm fairly certain that prior to the mandate it would have been virtually nil.

Why does your type have such a vendetta against those who work to take care of themselves? Those who are without Medicaid, Section 8 Housing, WIC, SNAP, food stamps, earned income tax credits, etc?

How about a break for someone else for a change? Maybe your welfare queens will have to tool around in a Cadillac Escalade without the spinning rims. So be it. Everyone's got to make sacrifices.

Please supply proof there are welfare queens tooling around in Cadillac Escalads, thanks.

Please supply proof that those who receive SNAP, WIC, and section 8 housing do not work, thanks
