Liberals versus Salt

Hey conservatards, it's voluntary you dumbasses. Not that I give a fuck if it's voluntary or not, just that it happens.

BLOOMY TO NYC: HOLD THE SALT

By MELISSA KLEIN
SHAKEUP: The mayor wants less use of these.Last updated: 2:58 am

The city has come up with a plan to help you shake your salt habit, according to New York magazine.

In a closed-door gathering at Gracie Mansion late last month, health experts and food-industry representatives were told about Mayor Bloomberg's next crusade - an effort to reduce the salt in processed food by 20 percent over the next five years, the magazine reports in this week's issue.

City health czar Dr. Thomas Frieden went as far as saying that high blood pressure, which is linked to excessive salt, is "the greatest public-health threat facing the city."

He leaned on industry groups to sign on to the plan by the end this month, according to an attendee.

Restaurateurs will be encouraged to join a "voluntary" initiative and that there won't be new regulations.

I'm all for regulating salt content. They put so much salt in our shit it's worse than loading it up with carcinogens. I support Bloomberg 1000% on this, and I'm not going to try to be against it for no other purpose than to sport moderate crendials.

Oh yeah, I am always worried about sporting moderate credentials! LOL

I just think it's kinda stupid that's all.

Sodium content only matters to a small percentage who are sodium sensitive and have high blood pressure.

That's a stupid lie you've been reading in the comments section of right-wing blogs you just trolled about this issue. Learn some facts before you open your big fat mouth, and never trust right wingers.

I haven't read the thread or any recent articles on this. Sodium does not "cause" high blood pressure and only increases such among those who are sodium sensitive.

Quit being such an emo, it's boring. It used to be fun, but now it's old hat.

are you being forced to eat that can of soup?

Are you being forced to smoke that cigarette? Are you being forced to eat e-coli contaminated hamburger? Are you being forced to use lead based paint? Are being forced to eat mercury contaminated fish?

it's not a legitimate regulation practice when a person can go to a grocery store and buy a shaker of salt to take with him.

So by that logic they can put all the acetone and toluene they want in my food just because I can buy it at the store.

As I've been arguing. The notion of regulating food quality is hardly a liberal notion. Protecting the public interest. Protecting public health and safety is a legitimate function of government. There is nothing radical or liberal about this at all and Bloomberg is hardly a liberal politician.

Well we needed regulation to take lead out of paint, and gasoline.
there are plenty of other examples of where something good for us had to be regulated.
I'd rather they regulate the thieves in Wall Street and congress before worrying about salt.

I think the average American eats several times the acceptable maximum of salt everyday... but I read that out of a yearbook from 1980. They still eat way too much, that's for sure. Give consumers a choice - let them ADD it after the meal is prepared. Dano wants corporations to make this decision for us, because he hates freedom.

Yepper, that is the essence of Dano's argument.

Bloomberg is a liberal by most standards. (extreme in my book)

Salt makes food taste better but can be overused.

I choose where to eat based on how the food tastes.

Force restaurants to take out the salt and I (along with many others) won't be eating there.

Dad was in the hospital with pnemonia last week. As he recovered he needed to eat to gain some strength. The hospital food was not seasoned (read "salted") at all so he wouldn't eat it (he's old and stubborn). We finally started bringing some decent food (food that tasted good because it was seasoned properly) in for him and in a couple of days he was strong enough to come home.

Yes, Bloomberg the billionaire owner of Bloomberg Business news, who supported the Iraq war and is a zionist, is definitely an extreme liberal. And we know that because you leaning, are just kinda sorta leaning right, but not really a righty, and Dano is the very epitome of moderation. A centrist really.

I'm the left wing nut.

Hey thanks Darla. He really has improved a lot since last week.

I know we have very different perspectives of right and left and do indeed see politicians differently. Most of the time I post my opinions based solely on my perspective.

The "leaning"right handle was chosed years ago when I started posting on a hunting website, of all things, and was debating with a very socially liberal hunter in the politics section of the board. People there couldn't believe I was a democrat as they had the "national" image of what a democrat was burned into their gray matter.

Here in OK we have a republican led government in all areas here except for governor. I hate it. I have voted for none of them......except for the governor. I loathe what the republicans would do to the school systems if they had the chance. Democrats definitely do a better job of keeping up infrastructure and taking care of the poor........something I am all for. There are so many areas that I agree with the democrat here on. So when I label Mr. Bloomberg as a "liberal" please remember it is from my perspective. I would expect you to see him and his policies differently.

Okay

A small percentage that have high blood pressure?

Don't worry USC, it's mainly just the 65% of Americans who are overweight that are more susceptible to the perils of high blood pressure.

Hardly any when you think about it.
