The incident occurred on April 22 when 16-year-old Kiera Wilmot decided to conduct the experiment on the grounds of Bartow High School.

Wilmot combined household cleaner and aluminum foil in an eight ounce water bottle.

The chemical reaction created a pop that sounds like a firecracker and smoke. Wilmot was not injured and neither was any other student.

"Wilmot advised she was told by a friend how to make the device," said the incident report. "Wilmot advised she did not know what would happen when she mixed the ingredients. She said she did know it would make smoke."

The school's assistant principal of discipline, Dan Durham, was also outside and saw the incident and addressed Wilmot, who was honest about the details of the project.

"She made a bad choice," said Durham told WTSP. "Honestly, I don't think she meant to ever hurt anyone. She wanted to see what would happen and was shocked by what it did. Her mother is shocked, too."

Following the incident, her science teacher was asked if they sanctioned the project. The teacher said no. The responding officer, upon the suggestion of Florida Assistant State attorney Tammy Glotfelty, arrested Wilmot, charging her with possessing or discharging weapons or firearms at a school sponsored event or on school property and possessing any destructive devices. Both counts are felonies and she will be tried as an adult.

Wilmot has also been expelled from school and will complete the rest of her high school education in an expulsion program. The Polk County, FL school district said the incident was in direct violation of its conduct code and her expulsion will not be overturned. Wilmot will be able to challenge her expulsion.

"Unfortunately, what she did falls into our code of conduct," Polk County, FL district spokeswoman Leah Lauderdale told the Miami Times. "It's grounds for immediate expulsion."

Durham said she is a good kid who has never had to be disciplined.

"She has never been in trouble before. Ever," Durham said.

The story has garnered buzz across social media - one side defending the student and the other defending the school system for expelling her.

A petition on causes.com called for all charges against Wilmot to be dropped to for her to be reinstated to the school "without penalty." As of Friday, it had been signed by almost 1,000 people.

The science publication The Scientific American addressed Wilmot's case in an article entitled, How to repel kids from science: by shackling curiosity in cuffs.

Several commenters also posted to a Facebook page about the school calling for the expulsion to be overturned. It is not clear whether it is the school's official Facebook page.

"Like a scarlet letter 'F' tattooed to her forehead, she may be forever branded a felon. And for what? A mistake in judgment? Curiosity run amok? Was there intent to do harm, to inflict pain or instill fear and terror? No," one post read.

The incident happened one week after the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three and injured more than 200.

Polk County Schools released a statement saying "Anytime a student makes a bad choice it is disappointing to us. Unfortunately, the incident that occurred at Bartow High School [April 22] was a serious breach of conduct."

"In order to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, we simply must uphold our code of conduct rules," the statement said. "We urge parents to join us in conveying the message that there are consequences to actions. We will not compromise the safety and security of our students and staff."

Friends of Wilmot said to WTSP that she has a twin sister who is still attending the school. The Wilmot family has not made a statement regarding the case.

Was it a science experiment in class with a teacher's supervision? Any other day I would wonder why a kid would do this, especially in today's environment. Definitely not a smart thing to do. I mean, after all, isn't it her first amendment right to make a bomb statement?

All kidding aside, what do you want? This kid made a fucking bomb and set it off on school campus, without teacher supervision. You don't mind guns all over the schools so it's ok to set bombs off now?

Why defend stupidity?

Here's the charging document:

You can't have it all, guys!

Liberals in Bartow? Sorry I don't believe such a thing exists.

Where did you get the idea such action was promoted by liberals?

It was the R's and GWB that used fear to promote the War in Iraq, killing thousands of innocent Americans. Yes, the punishment is silly, unless there is more to this story than what the media is reporting, which I suspect is true.

I thought law and order, not questioning authority, and zero tolerance were Republican positions.

Would a White Girl Be Prosecuted for a Botched Science Experiment?

kierawilmot.jpg

Kiera Wilmot

Kiera is, as one might expect, black. The notion of a white girl getting hauled off to jail for a harmless expression of intellectual curiosity is dubious, to say the least. And though the rise of "zero tolerance" policies in American schools should theoretically be race-neutral, that's not the reality. According to the Dignity in Schools campaign, "students of color... are more likely to be suspended and expelled than their peers for the same behavior" and "African American students [are] 3.5 times as likely to be expelled" as whites. What happened to Kiera Wilmot is part of a broader story about racial disparities in our criminal justice system.

Yet we don't have to go macro to get the whiff of racial bias in this case. The prosecutor who decided to throw the book at Kiera is one Tammy Glotfelty, an assistant state attorney in Florida. The officer who arrested Kiera named Glotfelty in his police report:

I THEN CONTACTED ASSISTANT STATE ATTORNEY TAMMY GLOTFELTY VIA TELEPHONE. I ADVISED [HER] OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE CASE AND SHE ADVISED THIS OFFICER TO FILE THE CHARGES OF, POSSESSING OR DISCHARGING WEAPONS OR FIREARMS AT A SCHOOL SPONSORED EVENT OR ON SCHOOL PROPERTY F.S.S. 790.115 (1) AND MAKING, POSSESSING, THROWING, PROJECTING, PLACING, OR DISCHARGING ANY DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE F.S.S. 790.161 (A).

Sounds absurdly harsh, right? And there has been no reversal of this decision since then. But Glotfelty isn't always so heartless. Just last week, she decided not to prosecute a teenager named Taylor Richardson who accidentally shot and killed his younger brother with a BB gun. Glotfelty declared the case "a tragic accident." I don't doubt that it was. The Richardson kid will probably have nightmares about this incident for the rest of his life. But I do wonder how to make sense of a prosecutor who one week shows understandable compassion for a kid who made a terrible mistake and the next week insists on giving a teenager the harshest possible sanction for something that didn't harm anyone.

The first Tammy Glotfelty has a normal-sized heart in her chest. The second one has a hole there.

There is one fact, however, that may help us figure out the discrepancy between Glotfelty #1 and Glotfelty #2: The Richardson family is white.

and you think liberals question authority?????

I think more Liberals do than Conservatives. I think that there is a value in the Republican party that confuses respecting elders with not questioning authority. I think the religious right considers not questioning there authority to be a tenant of belonging.

It has always been the very conservative's in my life who are offended by and or angered by stepping outside of social's expectations.

Gay Marriage is a great current example. To be for gay marriage is to question authority. It has always been the established order of things in the United States that same sex marriages are not vaild, when you stand up for same sex marriage, you are questioning authority.

First of all what the fuck does this have to do with politics? This is just plain stupid. I don't know what the young ladies motivation were but she had her head up her ass. She did an experiment that could have gotten her or someone else hurt. It was an egregious safety violation and she deserves swift and sure punishment.

Should she be criminally prosecuted? Probably not, I doubt her intent was to hurt anyone but she should definately be suspended and not permitted to return to class until she takes an appropriate safety seminar. The suspension should go on her permenant record and it should be long enough that she'll give real serious thought before pulling another stupid stunt like this.

So what the fuck does this have to do with politics other than demonstrating your paranoia?

Homey finally makes a point.....All kidding aside, what do you want? This kid made a fucking bomb and set it off on school campus, without teacher supervision.

I can't buy the story that some friend told her how to make this and didn't tell her what would happen....that story just don't ring true.

I think zero tolerance policies and the consequences of such are legit political discussion topics. Otherwise I agree with your post.

We should all be allowed to carry bombs with us at all times.... we need to protect ourselves from an oppressive government, and from crime. You can blow up the place much faster than you can get a police officer to show up!

faux outrage. you liberals are happier than pigs in shit over a white boy facing 20 years for bad amateur rapping

you, sir, are so full of shit that you could start a fertilizer plant yourself. 99% of the time you are all about 'doing what you're told' whenever instances of government misconduct is pointed out to you.

I think the punishment is appropriate. The girl did a stupid thing.

Agree. And it has nothing to do with politics, until the case of the dropped charges on the white kid was revealed. I knew about this yesterday but didn't post it. There's an obvious racial angle to this, proven by inconsistency between the SA and her brother? on the PD.

And you're right, Jarod, Polk county is a hotbed of racism.

We should all be allowed to carry bombs with us at all times.... we need to protect ourselves from an oppressive government, and from crime. You can blow up the place much faster than you can get a police officer to show up!

Yeah...where's STY and everyone complaining about her second amendment rights to build a bomb and her first amendment rights to do it on school grounds?

Above all, where's the NRA defending her like they did that white boy who expressed his first and second amendment rights in school?

more assumptions of facts not in evidence, you asshole. I'll respect authority figures WHEN that respect is earned. you seem to have this belief that you OWE authority some respect, no matter how shitty they treat you. I guess that's why you're begging for slavery.
