It's not up to me to separate ISIS from Islam. ISIS claims to be Islamic---their name means Islamic state. It's not up to me to claim they're not. It's not up to me to claim they don't represent all of Islam.

It's up to Muslims to do that. And yes, I'd like to see a little more urgency on their part. And not just words but action. Am I allowed to say that without being labeled a bigot?

Which "Muslims are condemning ISIS?" not the jihadist -part of Islam
Some -but not all Salafist - part of Islam. Islam is multi-polar, within the Sunni/Sh'ia divide too are divisions (schools)

What ISIS is doing is trying to create the caliphate again. It's a combination of religious and political ideology.
Just like sharia is the basis of Islamic law. In Islam there is no inherent division between politics and religion.

Modern states use a political construct (mostly) without religion, but Islamic States can surely be religious in nature.
Iran as an Islamic state is much the same -a theocracy intertwined with a political/government structure.

If you do any counter-terrorism studies, you see that term commonly used not "radical Islam" -
which is better then "violent extremists" but still not as accurate.
salafi jihadism is the organizing principle of both AQ and ISIS


There is Shia terrorism too. But that is rarely exported out of the ME region.
