Letter To A Whiny Young Democrat

No, I don't, it is not what my daughter tells me, she being the deputy director of Medicare. It would have cost me one way or another. She use to work for Aetna, she has seen both sides of the issue and has decided to fight the insurance system! and a advocate to take the profit out of medicine!
Take profit out of medicine? Are you kidding me? Doctors go into debt in the hundreds of thousands to get through medical school. Drug companies spend millions developing new drugs. Most of what they develope doesn't lead to anything. How do you propose we find a cure for different cancers? Do you think AIDS drugs just fell from the sky like manna? What motivation will a company have to find new drugs if there is no profit in it? Why will the best and the brightest become doctors if there is no way to make a living. You could have had healthcare if borders were just dropped on buying insurance and some sort of modest med mal reform was passed. This is crazy. People don't become doctors and chemists just to change the world. They become doctors and chemists to change the world nd make a really nice living doing it. Take away the motive to create a better life for yourself and less people will be doctors.

This pretty much expresses my sentiments as well.

My children and me I can no longer be denied health care and neither can they. It helped my parents, too, it closed the medicare donut hole on prescription drugs!
You never were denied care were you....?
Even the illegals from Mexico and South America know they can't be denied care.....

So now that the Republicans control the House, by a modest amount, you expect miracles....
You side controlled the ENTIRE 3 branches of government with a super majority and did squat, and now you want miracles.....
Why am I not surprised in the least.....

What exactly do you mean care? I was denied procedures, but I have been fortunate compared to some.

The sane people of this nation know that 'job creating' miracles aren't going to come from government. That's not why the TEA party backed candidates. We want the government off our backs, shrink itself down in size, stop spending money, and let the free market create jobs.

This'll be a great excuse down the road, when repubs can't get the economy moving any faster than the dems did.

Here's Tea Party philosophy in a nutshell. "Get rid of all government programs that don't benefit me and only me!"

Ain't that the truth. There was a segment on NPR that "the Labor Department took an unprecedented step against a Kentucky coal mine Wednesday, asking that a federal judge shut it down immediately to protect the lives of those who work there."

"The Freedom Mine employs about 130 miners and was cited for safety violations more than 700 times this year alone."

Apr. 12 — A federal inspector cites Massey's Freedom Energy Mine No. 1 for excessive coal dust and notes "this is the 276th time this standard has been cited at this mine in the past 2 years."

And that fat s.o.b. Blankenship is still making excuses and men are dying while he's sitting pretty with his millions and millions in salary and compensation.

Some government oversight doesn't have enough teeth, IMO.

Maybe that's true of US doctors but others around the world have just as much interest in healing patients, looking for cures, and research, and for less money, too.

People in the united States use to become doctors to heal others and there was very little wealth, but they always earned a better than average income.

What happened to altruism, everything has to be a for profit these days.

which is why the companies are CURRENTLY raising ALL of their premiums, so that when the supposed reforms take effect, they lose NOTHING.

I guess you didn't take statistics and probabilities when you went to school?
What the fuck do you think the Insurance Companies were doing before Health Care reform? What the fuck do you think is driving health care reform other then the fact that insurance companies have raised premiums to the point that it accounts for 16 to 18% of a companies cost for doing business. In 1975 that cost was 6% and the coverage was nearly 100%! Now the cost is 3 times as much and that only get's you a high deductable HSA. What you're seeing now is only the beginning of HC reform. Oh sure, the FOP's hate it because they're afraid of any change and, quite frankly, aren't really interested in anyone benefiting from government services other than themselves, so as long as the hyporcrites have their medicare, they could give a fuck less about the rest of us.

Rest assured compadre, you have just seen the beginning of HC reform. By 2012 a vast chunk of people are going to understand what it is they have gained and they are gong to like it and then you're going to see these reforms completed. This is just the beginning.

Because many of us have been raised that altruism is a form of canabalism. There's some merit to that. I can tell you this. If you want to make a lot of money, there are easier ways to do it then being a physician. You can make a lot of money as a physician but you're not going to be succesfull at obtaining the education or in practice if that's your driving motivator.

I personally take great pride in my work. It has a great impact on keeping communities clean, safe and healthy while at the same time conserving resources and improving the bottom line. Knowing what has come before, I take great pride in my work. I know I can make more money doing something else but I probably wouldn't have the same level of career satisfaction that I do now.

That's rather a misnomer Soc. In most of the industrialized wealthy nations of the world they have done exactly that. Health Care is ran as non-profits. That includes the insurance companies. Keep in mind, just because one works for a non-profit company or organization doesn't mean that that organization doesn't generate a lot of revenue or that it's top performing employees don't earn huge salaries. They do. A typical MD in the UK makes a bout $150,000/year. Insurance company executives in France earn well in excess of six figures. As for pharmaceutical companies. That's a bogus argument to. The vast majority of basic and applied research in drugs and medical technology is all ready done by non-profit organizations, that is, our public University systems, which does the overwhelming majority of the research. Not the drug companies and those researchers are well compensated too. As for the millions of dollars drug companies spend to approve drugs do you know where most of that money is spent? It's spent in clinical and safety trials and it's spent on legal costs (patent developments) and marketing. Most of the biggest advances in drug development, in recent years, hasn't come out of the the drug companies. They came out of universities who have leased the patent rights to the drug companies with the profits going to that universities endowment.

So operating health care as a NPO has been done through out most of the modern wealthy industrialized nations. It's been done succesfully and the acheive higher outcomes then we do in the US not to mention that most of the advances in HC in the US comes out of the public, non-profit, sector.

I think what really worries me about the current trend in politics is how rural Americans are divided against urban Americans. Has it always been this case that urban and rural Americans have been this divided? Why is there such a substantial disconnect between rural and urban Americans? I know some here would argue that the disconnect is identity based, whites vs blacks or latinos or that it is ideological, conservative vs liberal or reliqious vs secular but that's not the case, look at the electoral map of yeserdays elections and it's clear to see. Urban voters are clearly on one side of the and rural voters on the other. I wonder where these differences stem from?

I can only speculate as to the reason behind the situation you describe. Maybe it is because rural folks don't feel the pinch of economic downturns as severly as their urban counterparts. Maybe it does have to do with religion but I can't really see that as there are plenty of religious people in cities and plenty of godless people in the country. Honestly Mott, I really don't know the answer but I definitely do agree with you....there is a definite divide.

On a different note you will notice that my part of the state which includes neither OKC or Tulsa is the only blue part of the state (I think of it as blue as in "blue dog") when it comes to representatives. We elected Dan Boren again and I'm happy about that. I am not happy about the results of any of our state offices.

The fact that universal healthcare systems cost less and deliver better healthcare is pretty the nail in the coffin. Especially since it's easily graphable. Healthcare is just one of those areas the government does better in.

I'm still kind of in shock that Gene Taylor lost in my district. He was, if anything, more conservative than Dan Boren and he was a titan in the area. The Republican was able to win by essentially running against the Democratic party.

That's what the republican tried to do here. I don't know how many signs that read, "A vote for Boren is a vote for Pelosi" I saw but I could probably fuel my wood stove for a while with them if I were to gather them up. We country folk weren't falling for it though. ;)
