Air raids took place almost every night and a large number of German bombers dropped hundreds of tons of bombs on the capital. Typically there were 100 to 200 bombers dropping around 200 tons of high explosive and 300 incendiaries although there were raids with 300 and 400 planes with more than double the amount of bombs dropped.

And we remember by simple memorials and silence. No circus. No ground zero. No big fuss. But one hell of a lot of dignified respect for almost every British family who lost someone.

I respect the british way of doing things. But this thread seems to be more about protesting all the 9/11 anniversary attention than about commemorating the loses the british suffered.


No, we in the US are not quiet, reserved people. No, we do not quietly remember with dignity. But why is our way wrong? I can understand it if you are tired of hearing about it. Some people here are too. I can understand being against the war or the atrocities, but that is not what today is about.

Today is about a collective memory of a horrible attack. We were not at war, as England was in the pics you posted. If you want to blame the US for decades of crappy foriegn policy, thats fine. But most ofthe people who died on 9/11 were not responsible for that crappy foriegn policy.

The people who died in NY on 9/11 were custodians, maintenance people, firefighters, policemen, emergency response people and innocent pedestrians.

When I was in the military and leaving port, I said goodbye to my wife like it could be our last time to see each other. We knew it was a possibility. When people go to work in the morning they don't think that way. And yet, hundreds of spouses watched their loved ones leave for work with a quick kiss and would give anything to be able to say more now. Children have started school or moved on into high school or college, without having their Mom or Dad there to see them and encourage them. Parents have buried children and never recovered from that.

The US is a relatively young nation. There has been a nation news media (radio or tv) for close to half of our existance. We are a nation of individuals, but we are moved by the emotional content of media broadcasts. It is who we are.

I understand you disagree with much of this. But is there really a need to try and ridicule the commemoration of such a horrible event? Wouldn't the more civilized and noble act be to simply ignore this and let it pass?

We have had your 911 for ten years as if it is the only thing that matters in the world. To me, dressing up in Scottish or Irish gear, painting drums with bloody shamrocks when there not one Scot or Irish present is verging on disrespect for the Scots and Irish who played such an important part in defending Europe. It looks cheap and Disneyfied.
Of course we were all shocked when it happened but lets leave it there. Do you not understand how this is being used to promote false patriotism by those who would leave America in a NY taxi second if they were in personal danger. It is just continuing the manufactured national fear that has allowed your politicians to slowly strip away your freedoms and your rights.
Frighten and govern.
Remember, weep, respect, move on and remember how lucky you were that that was the only time your country has ever been attacked.
Please cry but please do not expect the rest of the world to don sackcloth and ashes and weep with you.
And to invite Bush to appear at a solemn occasion that he, Cheney et al so blatently turned to their advantage is disgusting.
You may think that is callous but note this; I had relatives who were injured or fought valiantly in each of the places I showed. When I was three or four years old I accompanied my Mum and Dad round our city centre as they counted the holes that once housed their favourite shops and restaurants. We drove a car with white paint flashes on the mudguards because car lights that had been banned had not yet been replaced.
We did not put on the uniforms of foreign troops, we did not force our grief on the world. We found, as we travelled, a mutual respect from Dutch, German and Frenchmen and we gave up counting the men on crutches with bodies and minds forever damaged. There was a dignity that I doubt you will ever fully understand. Dignity because that is what those who lost their lives deserved.
If you think I have ridiculed the disaster you are wrong. But if you think I have ridiculed the interminable fancy dress parades you are spot on.
