Last trapped Chilean miner rescued; ordeal ends

JOSE MINE, Chile – The last of the Chilean miners has been raised from deep beneath the earth. All 33 men have now been delivered from the longest underground entrapment in history.

thats so awesome for them and their families...good job to all involved
I think it's kinda funny how they mentioned claustrophobia as one of the risks of the operation. They're miners to begin with, so I'd assume they're not too bothered by close spaces. Add in being trapped in a very small cave with 30 other dudes and they're probably cool with it.

I do hope the company covers their inevitable psych treatment.

They have quite a lot of space. One was keeping fit by running 5(?) km per day up and down the drive. But you are right. They are miners and like divers, firemen, etc they have enough courage and experience to handle it better than the reporters on the surface who waxed eloquent without having nay personal experience.
I would doubt that the so-called experts will have much to do with their post traumatic this and that or any of the other modern psycho babblish nonsense. Yes, some will need advice but others are likely to shrug it off, kick the dog and go to the pub.
Miners are like that.

How crazy is it for that one minor who had both his wife and mistress show up?

In most countries minors are too young to get married, let alone have mistresses!!

It is my intention to hire a beautiful, tall, willowy blond, dressed in black with a black veil to briefly stand at the rear of the church during my funeral and to disappear as soon as she has been noticed, so that for all time people will ask, 'Who was that beautiful woman at his funeral?'

According to reports, BP was seen to rush in and seal the leak to prevent the flow of Chilean Miners from continuing. They want you to know they are on the job.

Topical, Damo. :D

As soon as they are fit enough the Chilean miners are being flown to meet Barack Obamas and share with him the secret of getting out of a massive black hole before November.

Awesome jokes. AWESOME.

As to Low, I wasn't aware they had that much space down there. My impression, limited obviously, was that they were trapped in a cave about the size of a small house. But I'll have to disagree with you on the PTSD thing. It affects people in a lot of different ways. I didn't think Iraq would fuck with my head, but here I am 3 years later and I still don't get any sleep at night.

I gotta say I really like that strategy.

They must have been in pitch black darkness for some time though, I'm sure that the batteries in their lamps only lasted a day or two.

I'm pretty sure they didn't use all their lamps at once. Since there were 33, if they lasted 2 days each they'd have never been in the dark, even before they were able to pass stuff down to them through the first hole drilled.

I am sure you mean miners? Anyway on that theme, the inevitable jokes have started.

Gary Glitter is in Chile now. It's the only place where you can slide a minor up and down a shaft and not get arrested.

Miners lamps have three settings, Full beam, park and off. I was trapped for just a few hours many many years ago. When we (two of us) realised, the first thing we did was to sit where we were, turn off our lights and consider our options. We were able to light a cig in the dark and take swig of water. Our 'park' beams should have lasted a good 8 hours, so more than 16 all together. Fortunately we got out after just a few hours completely unscathed save for a couple of cuts and grazes.
I dont think you get really scared for quite a while. Initially we were shit scared but the mind seems to find what it imagines to be possibilities and the realisation that there, quite literally, is no way out would not take over for a couple of days or so, particularly with the banter of 33 men. Must have been pretty dire after that.
As for the post traumatic this and post traumatic that, none of my Dad's mates and none of my mate's Dads showed any signs after WWII. My father in law who served in Italy closed his experiences out of his conciousness and led a normal and good life thereafter.
Much of it is to simply to afford the millions of American trick cyclists a healthy living and it is in their interests to feed the belief.
There is a lot to be said for having good mates and a few bob for a weekly pint or two. Better and cheaper than medications.

Back in WWII they called it "shell-shocked" and often men were sent back from the front because of it. Often they were dismissed as "faking" by their own families. PTSD is very real.
