There is nothing wrong with replacing him with a moderate and hardly unprecedented, a decade ago there was 3 Conservatives (Scalia, Rehnquist and Thomas), 4 Liberals and 2 moderates (Kennedy and Day-O'Connor).
Replace Stevens with a moderate and you have 4 Conservatives, 2 moderates and 3 Liberals. Big deal.
The lefties on here should show some moderation and realize that it's still fairly balanced.
Did the far left complain about her? Nope. THAT is the benchmark an honest person uses.
Because the far left has CERTAINLY complained about other Liberals that strayed even a bit to moderation (ie: Lieberman, Nelson, Landrieu).
Sotomayer is really a centrist. I'm dissapointed Obama didn't go for someone more liberal while he had the chance. Obama is way too far to the right. His judicial picks seem to be even worse than Clinton's, for christ sake.
Marshall and Brennan issued opinions opposing the DP in any circumstances.
I think that the supreme court would be the easiest way towards nationwide abolition, which is why I'm hoping to just put five liberals on the court and let the dice roll. I would literally give up Roe v. Wade to abolish the DP. But most liberals aren't like me, including Obama. I just hope he accidentally appoints someone who opposes his DP fetish, and they can set a permanent national precedent on the issue.
And I would support abolishing the DP to get Roe overturned. Granted, I wouldn't be giving anything up...
Blackmun, when nominated, was considered a moderate. As Harry said, as time passed, politics made his judicial viewpoint migrated to the left. Now, if a justice finds that certain restrictions on abortion are unconstitutional that makes them a liberal. What righties want is a Justice that sees no problem with ANY death sentence so long as there were no procedural problems with the conviction and sees ANY type of abortion as unconstitutional. The justices the right want are pro-police state, pro-war on drugs. Your hero, Scalia, believes that there is no reason to exclude evidence obtained in violation of the 4th Amendment, he believes instead that the defendant can sue after he has been convicted from his jail cell. THAT friends and neighbors is the epitome of a right wing justice on this court.
Out of the four possible combinations, opposing the DP and abortion is probably the least popular. Pretty much only exists amongst Catholics. But the only reason I admire the Catholics above most evangelicals is because of their consistency on the issue.
Darla would kill me for saying things like this. I'm glad she's not here.
So she supports the DP, then?![]()
s
No, she just supports abortion rights a lot more. I was honestly a bit excited about a possible Tim Kaine VP run, because he opposes the DP. Darla thought it the end of the world, because he was against abortion.
Given a choice between fucking Sam Brownback and Hillary Clinton, I would support Sam Brownback because of his opposition to the DP. Most liberals, obviously, aren't like this.
And, with regards to the DP, we seem to be living in a bizarro world where conservative Republicans express reservations about it and moderate Democrats can't trip over each other fast enough to prove their moderate credentials by supporting applying it to everyone in existence. Which is another thing that depresses me about America.
