june 23 2017 The parents of Michael Brown, who was shot dead nearly three years ago by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, have received a financial settlement.

A lawyer for the city said Ferguson's insurance company had paid $1.5m (£1.2m).
.
US District Judge E Richard Webber authorised the payment on Tuesday, but ordered the figure to be kept sealed.
"Disclosure of the terms of the settlement agreement could jeopardise the safety of individuals involved in this matter, whether as witnesses, parties, or investigator," the judge wrote.

However, state law requires that the figure be released, leading to city attorney Apollo Carey's disclosure on Friday morning.
2014 claimed that their son's death was due to a police culture of pervasive hostility towards African-Americans, the St Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

That's what I don't get.

If the police weren't culpable, on what legal basis is the city required to cough up 1.5 million for Brown's death?

Juries do anything they want and the city's insurance company knew the jury would be all or mostly black and hand out an even bigger settlement. I still think the city should have fought this in court though since they can drag it out for 5 years or more and the family would have eventually settled for far less than this.

Same reason why the Brown family got a $30 million wrongful death civil settlement against OJ Simpson even though the glove didn't fit so they (had to) acquit.

Criminal and civil law have different standards of proof.

Beyond a reasonable doubt vs preponderance of the evidence.

I get it but I'm still somewhat confused in that no one is debating how he died. All sides acknowledge the officer shot him. If the officer didn't act criminally isn't he following what he was taught to do? So is the police field guide on how to behave already in violation of civil law?

All the plaintiffs would've had to prove had the case gone to trial, is that Brown was unarmed and that the officer had other options at his disposal.

Put that argument in front of a sympathetic jury and they could've been on the hook for several times what they settled for.

Plus all the legal fees.

Big risk.

didnt they already rule the police not guilty? I could be forgetting.

The City leaders paid this out, to avoid going through a lengthy trail.
Plus it makes them appear to be compassionate; when it truth, they're just weak.

It is nice to know though, that the City of Ferguson places the value of $1.5 million for the life of a criminal.

They can probably expect even more similar behavior now, on the expectation of becoming rich.

And the evidence is what?

Brown got shot while assaulting a cop.

What a fucking joke

In any case 1.5 million well spent

I would prefer that these kind of lawsuits were fought by the cities; because lawyers know how much the city is willing to spend in defense and then they ask for a number smaller then that.
A lot of these suits are filed with the lawyer getting 25% of the settlement, if it's "settled" prior to going to trial and 30% if it goes to trial.
This means that the lawyer is going to receive around $375,00.00, just for FILING THE SUIT.

If these kind of things were challenged, they would eventually stop; because ambulance chasers wouldn't be getting their "pay day".

they just paid this to make it go away. they didn't want more stores burning. the city was clearly innocent in their actions, even the DOJ confirmed wilson acted completely appropriately. Mike brown was a thug piece of shit that tried to murder a cop by grabbing his gun.

wilson did nothing wrong based on the state investigation and the independent DOJ investigation lead by eric holder.
